Red Sox manager explains why leadoff hitter was scratched from lineup

The Red Sox scratched Jahmai Jones from Monday’s lineup due to “left hip tightness,” Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said pregame.
“Had it yesterday, too,” Tracy said. “Much better today, which is good. He was able to do some activity, but there’s still a little bit of end range in his swing, that he’s just at a place where he’s worried about like, fully turning the swing fully loose.”
Tracy said the hope is for Jones to be ready to play the next day.
Jones was replaced as the designated hitter by Mickey Gasper and Nick Sogard was bumped up to the leadoff spot in his place.
In other injury news:
Roman Anthony (hand) will play five innings in left field in his first rehab game at Double-A Portland Tuesday. The Red Sox would love to have him back in the leadoff spot, where production has underwhelmed in his absence.
“If he’s Roman, he can impact it in a very big way,” Tracy said. “I made comments all the time about him in Worcester. Like, even when Roman’s not at his best, he finds his way to first base because he’s got a really keen eye at the plate. He understands what’s a strike, what’s a ball.”
Isiah Kiner-Falefa will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday with Triple-A Worcester at the New York Mets’ affiliate in Syracuse. Tracy said the plan is for him to play second base in his first game.
Designated hitter Masataka Yoshida (hamstring) and right-handers Garrett Whitlock and Justin Slaten (both right elbow inflammation) underwent MRIs on Monday, but Tracy had no pregame update on the results.
