Readers Pick the Songs That Sound Like Chicago Blues

As the Chicago Blues Festival drew nearer, readers sent in their picks for the song that best captures the city’s blues sound—ranging from classics like “Messin’ with the Kid” and “Mannish Boy” to “Sweet Home Chicago,” “Dust My Broom,” and more.

With the Chicago Blues Festival closing in this weekend, we asked readers a simple question: what song perfectly captures the Chicago blues sound?

The responses came back fast—and not all of them were the same kind of answer. Some readers pointed straight to specific tracks, treating them like shorthand for the city itself. Others leaned on performers and vibes: the grin of a riff. the ache of a harmonica line. the swing you can’t help but move to.

For Brad Wilson. the definition is clear: “Messin’ with the Kid” by Buddy Guy and Junior Wells “always just said ‘Chicago blues’ to me.” Ty Jepson went with Elmore James and “Dust My Broom.” Courtney Cager described “Sweet Home Chicago” by Robert Johnson as “the unofficial soundtrack of the city. ” adding that “everyone knows it. everyone sings along. ” and that it captures “the pride. energy and soul of Chicago.” She tied it neatly to a sensory version of the city too. writing that you can “pair it with a Chicago-style hot dog” for the full experience.

Erin Eileen pointed to Muddy Waters and “Mannish Boy.” Jeff Varda chose Hound Dog Taylor’s “55th Street Boogie,” saying it captures “the energy of the city” and that “nobody is crying in their beer in this song.” Kurt Tyler Meister kept it simple with Howlin’ Wolf’s “Spoonful.”

Giovanni Taverna offered a more detailed case for Little Walter’s “Blue and Lonesome. ” calling it “electric blues with a solid bond to the roots due to the harmonica sound.” He tied the lyrics to history as well. describing “the sense of loneliness in a big city after the Great Migration from the South. ” and calling “Even the life and death of Little Walter” the “personification of the blues.”.

Other readers reached for different corners of the tradition. Paul Petraitis chose Jimmy Rogers’ “Chicago Bound.” Johnny Ramírez IV argued that Magic Sam’s “Sweet Home Chicago” is the “magnum opus” that “revolutionized the blues” by pioneering the “West Side Chicago blues sound.” Jason Fico picked B.B. King’s “How Blue Can You Get?” and William Stiker selected Johnny Winter’s “Tribute to Muddy” from “The Progressive Blues Experiment.”.

Not everyone looked for a single official champion. Richard T. Guidera Jr. wrote: “Any Blues Brothers tune.” And even among the more specific picks, there’s a shared thread running under the list—each reader treating their song choice like a kind of key that unlocks Chicago.

What emerges from the messages isn’t just a playlist. It’s a portrait of how people hear the city: in swagger, in sorrow, in harmonica fire, in street-level momentum—and in the songs that make it feel instantly recognizable.

  1. I feel like “Sweet Home Chicago” is cheating lol. Everybody knows it so of course it wins. But I guess that’s the point? Hot dog pairing sounds kinda random though.

  2. Wait so they’re saying the festival is this weekend and everyone picked the same song? Because my uncle said it’s “Mannish Boy” but the article says different people picked different ones. Also Buddy Guy is from the South right? I’m confused.

  3. “Messin’ with the Kid” should be it. The whole article is basically like “listen to this and you’ll feel Chicago,” which is true but also like… Chicago is more than one riff. “55th Street Boogie” being called the “energy of the city” made me laugh because yeah it’s hype, but what about winter blues? Idk, just let me hear the harmonica and I’m good.
