While Zay Flowers is in line to work as the Baltimore Ravens’ top weapon in the passing game after signing a four-year, $140 million contract extension, the club is hoping for somebody to step up in the wide receiver room to help the offense. With the depth chart wide open behind Flowers, it sounds like the front office may have acquired the next Michael Thomas in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle compared third-round rookie Ja’Kobi Layne to the former New Orleans Saints superstar, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN. Lane has been making electric plays throughout the early portion of training camp and appears to have caught the attention of the Ravens’ coaching staff.
“Rookie wide receiver Ja’Kobi Lane continues to be the talk of Baltimore Ravens training camp after another highlight-reel catch,” Hensley wrote. “During red-zone drills, Lane leapt high in the back of the end zone to grab a Lamar Jackson throw for a touchdown. The way Lane is consistently pulling in passes has drawn lofty comparisons.”
“The guy that I was around that his hands remind me of is [former NFL great] Mike Thomas,” Doyle said. “Mike Thomas had these strong hands where he could pull it down in a way. You threw it in the vicinity, and you felt like he was going to go get it. There is a lot of that feeling. He is a very friendly guy to throw to.”
Lane, who is 22 years old, played three years with the USC Trojans before declaring for the NFL Draft. His numbers weren’t too flashy, but he proved to be a reliable target in the red zone for USC. In 30 career games at the collegiate level, Lane totaled 99 receptions, 1,363 yards, and 18 touchdowns.
While this is exciting news, Ja’Kobi Lane is competing for playing time in Baltimore. Alongside fellow rookie teammate Elijah Sarratt, Lane is in direct competition with Rashod Bateman and Devontez Walker. The Ravens will likely wait until near the end of training camp to decide the official pecking order in the wide receiver room.
