The Baltimore Ravens’ defense got bad news ahead of its Week 1 road opener against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens are scheduled to face each other in the Week 1 opener for both teams on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Indianapolis, pitting new Ravens coach and defensive guru Jesse Minter’s Calais Campbell led unit against a powerful rushing attack led by QB Daniel Jones and running back Jonathan Taylor.
On Friday, news broke that the Ravens are expected to be without their third-leading tackler from 2025, Teddye Buchanan, who is still working his way back from a knee injury.
“Ravens linebacker Teddye Buchanan (knee) is expected to miss Baltimore’s season opener vs. the Colts, sources tell CBS Sports,” Matt Zenitz wrote on X Friday. “Has practiced some this week as he continues to work back from knee injury from last year. Had 93 tackles in 14 games last season.”
Sunday’s matchup is being called a statement game for the Ravens, who haven’t lived up to Super Bowl expectations in recent years but have the talent to make a deep run this season under their well respected new head coach, Minter.
Minter said that the Ravens will also be without defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike this weekend, a player who impressed with 13 sacks in 2023 and 6.5 sacks in 2024 before missing all but two games due to a severe neck injury in 2025. Madubuike practiced during training camp, but Minter’s team will have to make do without him against the Colts.
Minter, for his part, is regarded as one of the brightest defensive minds in football and is hard at work devising a game plan to slow down Jones, Taylor and the Colts. His team will miss Buchanan and Madubuike on Sunday, but don’t be surprised if the Ravens’ defense still dominates in an AFC South matchup that will bring out the best in both teams.
