Rashee Rice’s season routine has been interrupted by the kind of court order that can’t be coached around.
The Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver has been jailed after violating the terms of his probation, with the judge ordering him to serve 30 days behind bars. The decision comes after Rice tested positive for marijuana, breaking conditions set in his original sentence.
Rice was handed five years’ probation and 30 days of jail time last July over his 2024 hit-and-run crash on a Dallas highway. Under that sentence, the jail term could be served at any point over the five-year probation period. It didn’t become a short-term concern while he was playing—Rice was able to suit up for the Chiefs last season.
Now, at 26 years old, he faces a hard pause in preparation for the next NFL campaign. Rice is due to be released on June 16, which means he will miss the Chiefs’ OTAs and mandatory minicamp ahead of the 2026 season.
The case traces back to May 2024. when authorities said Rice was renting the Lamborghini SUV involved in a multi-car chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway. Police said the Lamborghini and another speeding car—a Corvette—were moving in the far-left lane of North Central Expressway when they lost control. The Lamborghini then went onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, triggering the collision across multiple vehicles.
Authorities also said the occupants of the Lamborghini and the Corvette left the scene without checking on the drivers and passengers in the other four cars involved. Four people in those other vehicles were treated for minor injuries.
A spokesman for the rental company, The Classic Lifestyle, said the Lamborghini rents for about $1,750 a day and is worth about $250,000.
Rice is a member of the Super Bowl LVIII-winning Chiefs team and is from the Dallas area. He played for Southern Methodist University and grew up in the Fort Worth suburb of North Richland Hills.
