Logan O’Hoppe made it clear just how difficult the past four years have been for him before the Angels traded him to the Rangers.
The Los Angeles Angels have struggled to compete year-in, year-out, and this past trade deadline, they decided to become a more aggressive selling ballclub. One of the trades they made was to send catcher Logan O’Hoppe to division rival Texas Rangers, along with reliever Chase Silseth, in exchange for infield prospect Angel Arredondo.
The past two seasons have been particularly rough for O’Hoppe, with Fangraphs having him as a below replacement-level player after tallying a total of -1.7 fWAR in 2025 and 2026. But on Sunday, he finally made his debut for the Rangers after receiving a call-up — going 1-2 from the plate in a 5-3 win over his former team.
It seems as though O’Hoppe had been crying out for a fresh start. The new Rangers player revealed in an interview with Ayako Oikawa of MLB.com just how difficult his four years with the Angels actually were.
“Whether on the field or off it, I didn’t like myself. The four years with the Angels were the most painful four years of my baseball life,” O’Hoppe said.
The Angels acquired O’Hoppe in a trade with the Philadelphia Phillies back in 2022, with Brandon Marsh heading to the City of Brotherly Love in exchange.
O’Hoppe turned heads in 2023 when he hit 14 home runs in just 51 games (199 plate appearances), and the sky appeared to be the limit for him considering that he was only 23 years of age at the time. The following year, he finished with 20 home runs and 56 runs batted in in 136 games played (522 plate appearances), and his contributions were worth 2.2 fWAR for that year.
Since then, his game has completely fallen off a cliff. A divorce from the Angels seemed inevitable. And perhaps he could take after Mike Napoli, a former Angels catcher who emerged as a star with the Rangers. Only 26, perhaps O’Hoppe still has a ton of untapped potential for the Rangers to bring out as they continue to push for a postaeason spot.
