Sean McDermott is not looking for a new job with the Rams. He is simply looking to learn. The former Buffalo Bills head coach visited Los Angeles’ training camp Friday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, using his year away from coaching to study how one of the league’s most respected organizations operates.
“Former Bills head coach Sean McDermott is visiting today with the Los Angeles Rams,” Schefter reported on X, formerly Twitter. “McDermott is using his off time to see how a few teams such as the Rams operate.”
McDermott was fired by Buffalo in January after the Bills fell 33-30 in overtime to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Divisional Round, marking the fourth time in five seasons Buffalo was eliminated at that stage.
He finished his nine-year tenure with a 98-50 regular-season record, five straight AFC East titles, and eight playoff appearances, but never managed to reach a Super Bowl. Bills owner Terry Pegula cited the need for “a new structure within our leadership” in explaining the move.
Rather than jump into another head coaching search, McDermott opted to take the 2026 season off, a decision he informed his staff of shortly after his firing. His visit to the Rams fits a pattern McVay has followed since arriving in Los Angeles in 2017, regularly bringing former head coaches and respected veteran voices onto his staff, most recently naming former Commanders head coach Kliff Kingsbury his assistant head coach this past offseason.
McVay himself signed a multiyear extension with the Rams back in February, cementing his status as one of the league’s most stable and sought-after coaching minds. Given McDermott’s track record in Buffalo, he is expected to be one of the top head coaching candidates once teams begin their searches at the end of this season.
For now, the visit gives McDermott a firsthand look at how a perennial contender runs its day-to-day operations, without any immediate plans to trade the booth for a spot on McVay’s staff.
