Rafaela’s pinch homer lifts Red Sox over Phillies

Rafaela pinch – Ceddanne Rafaela’s two-run homer off the Green Monster helped Boston beat Philadelphia 3-1, snapping the Phillies’ HR momentum.
A pinch-hitter delivered the kind of swing a slumping lineup needs, and Ceddanne Rafaela answered the moment by breaking a tie with a two-run homer off the Green Monster as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on Wednesday night.
Rafaela’s hit in the sixth inning came after the game was still within reach, putting Boston ahead for good. The homer also ended a run of offensive momentum for Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber, whose home-run streak was extended no further; it came to five games.
Boston’s surge followed a key pitching change as reliever Orion Kerkering entered to face the pinch-hitter. Rafaela connected on a fastball, a result that landed with authority in the home outfield and shifted the inning’s balance.
On the mound, Sonny Gray took the ball for the Red Sox and looked comfortable for much of his outing. He allowed one run and two hits across six innings, striking out six and walking one. The performance helped Boston keep Philadelphia from turning early threats into bigger damage.
Even with the deficit, Philadelphia had chances to keep pressure on.. In the ninth. Aroldis Chapman managed to work around two walks and struck out the side. finishing the game with a three-hitter.. It was also a clean continuation of Chapman’s strong recent work in closing situations. as he maintained a perfect record in nine save chances.
The Red Sox also got a second contribution from their power bats when Trevor Story—who had been in a slump—stayed engaged and sent a solo homer over the fence.. The shot mattered not just for the added run. but because Story entered the night hitting .203 with two home runs after a difficult stretch that included Boston losing three of its previous four games.
For the Phillies, their offense showed signs but couldn’t convert enough into runs.. Justin Crawford went deep, but Boston’s pitching and late-game execution limited the damage that followed.. Schwarber. after tying a franchise mark by homering in five straight games. went 0 for 2 on Wednesday night after that streak ended.
Boston’s win came with lineup movement as well. Willson Contreras returned after missing Tuesday’s series opener because of a bruised right hand sustained when he was hit by a fastball on Sunday. Meanwhile, Trea Tunner did not start due to an illness, but still appeared as a pinch walk in the ninth.
Philadelphia entered the game with an extended record of success under its current management. The Phillies fell to 11-4 since Don Mattingly replaced Rob Thomson after a difficult 9-19 start to the season, a managerial change that has coincided with a notable turnaround.
On the pitching side, the Phillies’ Andrew Painter struggled to find stable footing.. He surrendered one run and four hits in five innings. but the bigger issue was what came before and after—he was tagged for eight runs in just 3 2/3 innings in his previous start.. Wednesday’s matchup against Boston continued that sense of inconsistency, even as Philadelphia fought for late opportunities.
Looking ahead within the series, the contrast in pitching matchups sets up another high-stakes decision.. Phillies left-hander Jesús Luzardo is scheduled to start Thursday against Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suárez. who spent eight seasons in Philadelphia before signing a reported $130 million. five-year contract with Boston in January.. The matchup will carry added attention as Suárez returns to a familiar market, now as an opponent.
Thursday’s game will also reflect the broader question raised by Wednesday’s result: can Philadelphia maintain its offensive identity after Schwarber’s home-run streak stopped. while Boston tries to stabilize after recent losses?. For the Red Sox. Rafaela’s timely homer and Story’s solo shot offered evidence that the lineup still has punch. even when players are dealing with form and health issues.

Schwarber getting stopped like that was honestly the whole game right there
wait so rafaela wasnt even starting?? they just threw him in and he hit it off the green monster thats actually insane. pinch hitters never do anything and then this guy just comes in cold and does that. boston always finds a way man i swear
honestly the phillies have no business losing to boston right now like their lineup is supposed to be one of the best in the league and they cant score more than one run against sonny gray who i thought retired already or got traded or something i might be thinking of someone else but still the point is philadelphia should have won this and chapman closing it out like that with two walks and still getting the save just shows you boston has all the luck this year like every close game they find a way to squeeze it out and the phillies just stand there
Trevor Story is still on the red sox?? thought he got released like two seasons ago ngl
