Quinn Hughes open to re-signing after Wild exit

Quinn Hughes says he’s “definitely” open to re-signing with the Minnesota Wild, just days after the team’s season ended with a five-game loss to the Colorado Avalanche in the second round.

Quinn Hughes didn’t have to wait long to talk about what comes next after the Minnesota Wild’s playoff exit.. Less than 36 hours after the season ended with a five-games-to-none loss to the Colorado Avalanche in the second round. the Wild’s top defenceman told reporters on Friday he’s open to extending his stay in Minnesota.

“I really like it here. I think that I would definitely be open to re-signing,” Hughes said. “We’ll see what Billy wants to do again. You know, we’re not even 36 hours removed, so it’s a tough loss. But I definitely would be open to re-signing here.”

The timing matters.. The Wild made an aggressive move to land Hughes in the first place. signaling they were ready to push their championship plans to the center of the ice.. Minnesota acquired Hughes in a blockbuster trade that sent forwards Marco Rossi and Liam Ohgren. defenceman Zeev Buium. and a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft to the other side.

General manager Bill Guerin didn’t have a long-term lock on Hughes when he made that deal, and Hughes acknowledged the decision will still involve what Guerin wants to do. But the relationship between player and GM has clearly stayed strong.

Hughes said he has “a lot of trust” with Guerin, noting the Wild general manager also led Team USA to a gold medal at the Olympics. For Hughes, that familiarity is part of what makes the idea of staying feel straightforward.

“I have a lot of trust with Billy and respect him. and I think the way he views building a championship team are the players that we need. ” Hughes explained.. “He’s a great person, too.. Just takes care of the players, and it’s a great organization.. So, I mean, I want to win; he wants to win more than anyone.. I don’t think there’s many people more disappointed than him right now.. So he’s gonna do everything he can to make us a championship team.. And for me, that makes me excited.”

Hughes, 26, is eligible to sign an extension this summer. He has one more year remaining on his current contract at $7.85 million.

With the Wild season already over, Minnesota will look to keep the core together as it builds toward another run next year. And given Hughes’ comments, the team can at least count on one of its biggest pieces to be motivated about remaining in the mix.

When asked what will shape his thinking on where he signs, Hughes pointed to family and home while also stressing how he feels about Minnesota. He said he’s going to take time for “going home, talking to my parents, my brothers,” leaning on support close to him.

“At the same time, we’re 36 hours removed. I’m not sure I’m ready to get into detail what that would look like,” Hughes said, “but I think I can say that I really like it here.”

He added that he loves the team, the city and the fans, and called the locker room “a special group.” Hughes said he would be open to signing again with the group currently in the room.

“I love the team. I love the city and the fans. I mean, just, you know, being in that locker room was a special group and would definitely be open to signing here with the guys that we have in the room and just the people we have in the room,” Hughes said.

  1. I mean he “likes it there” but they just got swept?? So like… what’s the plan then. Still sounds kinda risky to me.

  2. Didn’t he get traded from somewhere? Wait no that was someone else. But if he trusts Billy Guerin because of the Olympics gold medal then shouldn’t that mean they’ll be contenders next year automatically. right?

  3. Wild really traded like 3 players and a first or whatever and now he’s saying he’s open. I always knew it was all about the “championship plans,” like sure, after losing 5 straight to Colorado. Also 36 hours is nothing, of course he’ll be nice to the GM. If they don’t turn it around, he’s gone anyway.
