The beachy tip of Cape Cod may be known for its salt air, but the Provincetown Film Festival’s 2026 awards brought a different kind of heat—quiet, sharp, and intensely personal.
After an opening that leaned into camp comedy with Adam Shankman’s “Stop!. That!. Train!”—RuPaul gets pulled into the mix of the spoof disaster premise—and a closing that kept it tender with “Family Movie. ” the festival wrapped up its cycle by revealing its 2026 juried award winners on Sunday. Audience awards came the very next day on Monday. turning the spotlight back to the people who sat through the screenings and cast their votes.
The Provincetown Film Society’s juried prizes carry real momentum. Juried short film winners become eligible for the short film Academy Awards prizes. while the narrative feature awards either offer support for upcoming theatrical releases or open the door to distribution for entries still seeking it.
A major thread through the winners was Kai Stänicke’s historical drama “Trial of Hein.” Multiple prizes went to the film. which John Krokidas described via a provided statement as capturing “the feeling of anyone who has ever dared to become someone other than the person the world expected them to be. ” and “the strength it takes simply to remain oneself.”.
In the audience-voted category for best narrative feature, the festival ended in a tie—another first in its history. Sam McConnell’s bruising queer bodybuilder drama “Test” shared the top spot with “Trial of Hein,” both chosen by in-person festival attendees.
Documentary prizes also leaned into women’s stories and queer history. Awards went to films about artist Anne Packard, tennis icon Billie Jean King, and queer filmmaker Barbara Hammer.
The festival also honored work across shorts. narrative features. and documentary films. with juries and special mentions that shaped the results. The John Schlesinger Awards—presented to first-time narrative and documentary feature filmmakers—were juried by John Krokidas for the narrative award and selected by Dawn Porter for the documentary award.
At the same time. the juried short film selections underscored the festival’s international reach and Oscars pathway: the Provincetown International Film Festival is an Academy Award-qualifying festival. meaning shorts receiving Best Narrative Short. Best Queer Short. and Best Documentary Short awards automatically become eligible to enter the Short Films competition for the concurrent season of the Oscars.

Juried Short Awards
The 2026 shorts jury consisted of a skilled group of film and art professionals including Yen Tan. Kristen Becker and Will Harrington. The Provincetown International Film Festival is an Academy Award-qualifying festival. The short films that received Best Narrative Short. Best Queer Short and Best Documentary Short awards will now be automatically eligible to enter the Short Films competition for the concurrent season of the Oscars.
