Prince Harry and Meghan Markle‘s return to the U.K. with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, has reportedly delivered a “crushing blow” to Prince William and Kate Middleton. The Waleses are now expected to approach any interactions with the Sussexes cautiously, given ongoing family tensions.
William and Kate may keep their distance
Royal commentator Nick Ede believes William and Kate will be especially cautious during Harry and Meghan’s visit. Ede, a former friend of Meghan and brand expert, notes that the Prince and Princess of Wales will focus on protecting their family and minimizing speculation about their interactions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Speaking to Cafe Casino, Ede said, “William and Catherine are likely to be extremely cautious. They will want to protect the stability of their own family and avoid being drawn into another cycle of speculation, private conversations becoming public and every interaction being analyzed.” (per The Mirror).
Kate is not expected to repair the rift
Although Kate is known for her calming presence within the royal family, Ede does not believe she should be expected to mediate between William and Harry. The brothers reportedly have not spoken for several years, and their relationship has been strained since Harry stepped back from official royal duties in 2020.
“Catherine has often appeared to be a calming influence, but it would be unfair to expect her to act as the person responsible for repairing the relationship between the brothers,” Ede argued.
A ‘Fab Four’ reunion may still happen
While a reunion appears unlikely in the near future, Ede believes William, Kate, Harry and Meghan may eventually come together. He said, “I wouldn’t rule out seeing the four of them together eventually, particularly at a major family or royal occasion, but a genuine ‘Fab Four’ reunion feels some way off. That phrase belongs to a very different chapter in their lives.”
The brothers’ relationship became more complicated after Harry and Meghan publicly discussed private family matters in interviews, their Netflix documentary series and Harry’s 2023 memoir, Spare.
The Sussexes could overshadow the Waleses
In a recent interview with The Mirror, former royal butler Grant Harrold suggested that Harry and Meghan may seek to compete with William and Kate, especially during the Prince and Princess of Wales’ upcoming trip to India.
“I think there is competition between William and Catherine’s official visits and Meghan and Harry’s unofficial trips… It does look like whenever William and Catherine do anything, it appears that Harry and Meghan go on to do the same,” Harrold told the outlet.
“Brothers and sisters always have competitiveness; it’s a natural thing when they are younger… But when it comes to William and Harry, it has followed into adulthood, and it does seem to be tit for tat. One does something, the other follows; one makes an announcement, the other makes an announcement, which overshadows a lot,” he added.
