Prime Video’s New Near-Perfect Action Thriller Remains a Global Smash on Streaming

Since its release on July 15, Prime Video’s latest action thriller has proven itself to be a worthy competitor in today’s streaming landscape, which gets more and more crowded each day. Starring Octavia Spencer and Hannah Waddingham as lifelong best friends whose relationship is turned upside down by an explosive secret, the hit series has quickly become a global sensation, and continues to fend off all manner of challengers on Prime Video even now, two weeks after its debut.

Prime Video’s Newest Hit Is a Near-Perfect Thrill Ride

Created by Tessa Coates, Ride or Die combines all the high-octane fun of a good action thriller with comedy to bring viewers a throwback series in the same vein as buddy action comedies of the 80s. However, instead of focusing on two younger besties, Ride or Die‘s heroes are in their 50s, which adds an extra layer of depth to the series.

Starring Spencer as Debbie, an American wife of a member of Parliament, she believes her best friend, Judith (Waddingham), to be a mild-mannered forensic accountant. Instead, she discovers that her sister from another mister is really an elite international assassin that’s spent years living a double life.

When one of Judith’s missions goes horribly wrong, both are put in jeopardy and quickly become the targets of ruthless killers, law enforcement, and dangerous criminals. Racing across Europe, Debbie and Judith are forced to confront decades of shared history, long-buried regrets, and the sacrifices Judith has made to protect the people she loves.

Scoring a near-perfect Certified Fresh rating of 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, Ride or Die also stars Bill Nighy, Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, and Savannah Steyn, to name a few. Called everything from “one of the best shows of the year” to a series that “doesn’t transcend its assorted genres, but instead happily plays with them,” Ride or Die is clearly a favorite of many thanks to the incredible chemistry between Spencer and Waddingham, as is evident not only from its Rotten Tomatoes score, but in its complete domination on streaming.

‘Ride or Die’ Continues To Be a Streaming Hit on Prime Video

Releasing all eight episodes on July 15, Ride or Die quickly became one of the hottest new shows in the world. It skyrocketed up the Prime Video charts, becoming the #1 series on the Amazon-owned platform for the week of July 20–26. While one would expect its popularity to drop off given the recent releases of Masters of the Universe and The Devil’s Mouth, that hasn’t been the case with the new action smash.

Per Flix Patrol, Ride or Die remains Prime Video’s most popular hit across movies and TV shows, beating not only The Devil’s Mouth and Masters of the Universe, but Project Hail Mary and Off Campus as well. Needless to say, Amazon definitely has a hit on their hands with the new series, but will there be a second season of the action favorite?

Thus far, there’s been no word on whether Ride or Die will continue, but things are still in the early stages. It’s only been out for a little over two weeks, so Amazon is most likely still reviewing their own internal data before making a decision about its future. That being said, showrunner Matt Miller divulged in a recent interview what the future could hold for the series should it continue. “We’d have new bad guys, new villains, new danger, and new countries that Debbie and Judith are visiting, because part of the show is this wanderlust. And without giving away too many spoilers, there’d be a wedding.”
