Prime Video is about to push its rom-com instincts into a corner of pop culture that already has built-in devotion: the Star Wars fandom. This afternoon, the streamer confirmed The Love Hypothesis will begin streaming on September 23, with an official trailer expected in the coming weeks.
The project has been in the works as part of Prime Video’s push for more YA-forward content, first teased back at the end of April. Claire Scanlon directs the film, with a script by Sarah Rothschild. Lili Reinhart is set to star alongside Nicholas Duvernay and Arty Froushan.
The romance at the center is coming from a very specific source: The Love Hypothesis is based on the popular Star Wars fan-fiction novel of the same name written by Ali Hazelwood. In that book. the love story pairs Kylo Ren with Rey—Kylo Ren being played by Adam Driver. and Rey played by Daisy Ridley.
That connection doesn’t stay locked in the pages. Tom Bateman—Daisy Ridley’s husband—has been tapped to play the lead role of Adam in the project, who is described as being directly inspired by Kylo Ren.
Prime Video’s move lands after a year of wide-ranging success across genres. including the second season of Fallout. which arrived back at the end of 2025 and continued well into 2026. The streamer has also leaned into superhero hits with Invincible and The Boys. with Invincible going off the air for good while The Boys returns next year.
The Love Hypothesis will join Prime Video’s broader slate of straight-to-streaming movies this year. including The Bluff and The Wrecking Crew—both noted for hitting streaming charts even as reviews landed lukewarm for at least one of them. Prime Video positions the new release as another step in a catalog built to please fans of all kinds.
The timing is straightforward. but the interest isn’t: Prime Video is bringing a YA-forward romance adaptation with explicit Star Wars fandom DNA. while the broader Star Wars movie picture continues to shift behind the scenes. At the time of writing in June 2026. it’s unclear if Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars movie about the New Jedi Order will ever overcome its development hurdles and make it to the big screen; both Ridley and director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy have confirmed the film is still in active development. but there are no concrete plans to begin filming.
Only time will tell if that uncertainty ends up feeling familiar to fans—especially compared with The Hunt for Ben Solo, which was set to return Adam Driver to his role as Kylo Ren.
