Preston vs Wolves prediction: Old Gold set for away win

Wolves head to Deepdale to face Preston North End in the Championship on Saturday and will be aiming for a victory after the season did not get off to the winning start that was expected.

The Old Gold have come down from the Premier League and been tipped to push for a return but needed an injury-time penalty to draw with Blackburn at Molineux last Friday.

Preston will look to make life difficult for Wolves and will be looking to earn their points of the campaign after losing 2-1 at newly-promoted Bolton last weekend.

Team News

Defender Lewis Gibson returns for Preston after missing the defeat at Bolton through suspension while summer signing Harry Clarke could start at the back. Brad Potts remains sidelined having missed pre-season due to injury.

Wolves will be without Kieran Trippier due to a knee problem picked up in the draw with Blackburn. Yerson Mosquera also injured his ankle last Friday and is unavailable.

Rafiki Said and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde are out though goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is nearing a return to full fitness.

The Stats

The last four meetings between these sides at Deepdale have ended in draws.

North End have lost only two of their last 11 games against teams who have come down from the Premier League.

Wolves have won just three league games in the last 12 months.

Preston have not beaten Wolves at home since a 2-1 win back in March 2008.

Raul Jimenez has scored in both of his home league debuts for Wolves – netting against Blackburn last Friday and hitting the target against Everton back in August 2018.

Prediction

Wolves are among the favourites to push for promotion after dropping down to the Championship from the Premier League.

However, the Old Gold came unstuck against Blackburn Rovers at Molineux and had to settle for a point after scoring an equaliser from the penalty spot in injury-time.

A trip to Preston will reinforce how tough the second tier is but Wolves will hope their quality shines through at Deepdale.

North End suffered an opening day defeat at newly-promoted Bolton and could be set for another loss if they don’t improve on last week’s showing.

Preston have found the net in both games this season but have also failed to keep a clean sheet. Wolves conceded twice to Blackburn and so with both defences looking fragile early in the season, backing both teams to score may be a smart bet.

Raul Jimenez, who represented Mexico at the World Cup this summer, has returned for a second spell at Wolves and the veteran forward kept his cool to score from the spot last time out.

Coming on as a second-half substitute, Jimenez may be used from the bench again but will be pushing to start. Regardless of how long the attacker spends on the pitch, he’s a serious attacking threat and looks a wise pick to score anytime.
