Premier League fans will now hear what players and referees REALLY say to each other – with TV broadcasters set to roll out audio footage from RefCam

On-field conversations between players and referees will be broadcast during Premier League games this season.

Last season, the Premier League introduced RefCam – a camera mounted to the referee’s ear which showcased their view of proceedings.

And in up to two games per week, its remit has been expanded to include audio, revealing interactions between players and referees.

Discussions will not be broadcast live but shortly after selected incidents on the official broadcast, with the specific situations shown determined collaboratively by broadcasters, the Premier League and Pro Ref.

The Premier League say playing audio will ‘give supporters further insight into how and why decisions are made’.

However, live in-game VAR audio is not included in the Premier League’s transparency drive due to IFAB restrictions. The Premier League, though, remain committed to lobbying football’s regulatory body to approve opening VAR communications for live broadcast.

The Premier League and Pro Ref are intent on spotlighting decision-making processes and will begin to directly quote officials – including VAR – to explain the rationale behind contentious decisions.

In selected incidents, those quotes will be posted on the Premier League Match Centre X account, the Premier League website, app and illuminated on big screens inside stadiums.

Meanwhile, the Key Match Incidents Panel – first introduced during the 2022-23 season – will start publishing their weekly verdicts.

The independent panel, which convenes to assess refereeing decisions, comprises three ex-players or coaches plus a representative from Pro Ref and the Premier League.

The five-person body reviews whether key decisions – such as red cards, penalties, offside decisions and disallowed goals – were correct and delivers performance reviews of match officials. Those reports will be posted onto the Premier League website weekly.

Furthermore, chief refereeing officer Howard Webb will continue to analyse divisive decisions on Match Officials Mic’d Up – aired on Sky Sports and TNT Sports – which features comprehensive audio from on-field and VAR officials.
