Portugal keeps pressure off, begins Jota tribute

Portugal honors – Portugal arrived in the United States for its World Cup campaign with big expectations on its shoulders, but players said they’re refusing to turn that pressure into their focus. Midfielder Vitinha pointed to a game-by-game mindset before Portugal’s first grou

PALM BEACH GARDENS. Fla.—The heat hung in the air as Portugal took the pitch for its first training session in the United States. and the fans who packed in didn’t let the moment feel quiet. Chants rolled through Palm Beach’s humid afternoon. temperatures in the upper 80s F—around 31 to 32 Celsius—and Portugal’s star forward Cristiano Ronaldo led the team in applauding the supporters.

Yet even with the pressure that comes with being among the favorites in a World Cup expanded to 48 teams, players were clear about where they wanted their attention to land: not on the trophy, not on the headlines, not on the weight that follows expectations.

“We have not talked about putting the high pressure on our team,” midfielder Vitinha said through a translator Saturday. “All competitions are won by focusing on the present moment and not worrying about future outcomes.”

What Portugal aims for, he said, is straightforward. “What we can do is think game by game. … We would love to win, and if we go through the group stage, we will go one game at a time.”

Portugal’s first test comes quickly. The team begins group play against Congo on June 17 in Houston.

The memory Portugal carried into training went far beyond matchday routines. After Portugal arrived in the United States on Friday evening. the squad’s bonds—and the sorrow that still lingers—were marked by a gift from the country’s Prime Minister. Each player received a bracelet with their name and with the name of the late Liverpool forward Diogo Jota. who was killed in a car crash in Spain last July.

Jota was a regular on Portugal’s squad, and this year he was also included as an honorary team member by coach Roberto Martínez.

“We have received this with a lot of love,” Vitinha said, pointing to the green and red bracelet on his wrist.

The tribute sat alongside a very practical concern: the weather. Extreme temperatures have been a worry across many of the 16 host cities, with protections such as cooling stations and hydration breaks during matches implemented.

Vitinha said he expects the conditions to affect Portugal—but he stressed that it isn’t a special obstacle for one team.

“Obviously the physical question is very important,” he said. “The weather conditions will very much affect how we play, but that is for everybody. It’s not just for us. With the temperatures in the United States, Mexico and Canada, it is very different, but it is the world championship. There are no excuses. There are no conditions that can keep us from giving everything for our national team.”.

During Saturday’s session, players hydrated as is typical during any practice. They didn’t seem visibly worn down by the heat, and some appeared to have used the conditions to their advantage—spending time at the beach earlier Saturday to unwind.

“It’s important for our head, our mental aspect as well to take advantage of the conditions we have,” Vitinha said, “to relax a little bit.”

Portugal will be based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, throughout the World Cup, beginning with the June 17 opener against Congo in Houston—an early step in a tournament where the talk about destiny is loud, but the team is insisting on something smaller and closer: the next game, then the next.
