Portugal and Croatia clash in Toronto’s heatwave

Portugal vs – Portugal and Croatia meet in the World Cup Round of 32 at Toronto Stadium as a heat warning pushes conditions to feel like 42 C at kickoff and triggers the cancellation of broadcasts at Nathan Phillips Square. The day could decide the World Cup careers of Cris
TORONTO — Fans were already lined up outside Portugal’s hotel and practice site in the city yesterday, waiting in the hope of a glimpse of Cristiano Ronaldo, as Toronto’s weather tightened its grip.
Today. Portugal will take on Croatia in the World Cup Round of 32 at Toronto Stadium. with the tournament’s schedule landing its final game in the city at that venue. But the match day atmosphere is being shaped by more than football. A heat warning is in place across Toronto, with humidity at kickoff expected to make it feel like 42 C. A strong thunderstorm is also forecast to arrive in the evening.
For many supporters, the swelter has already come with a loss of tradition. The city says today’s match broadcasts at Nathan Phillips Square have been cancelled due to the extreme heat forecast. The FIFA Fan Festival, however, will still be open, with heat relief measures including misting stations and drinking water trailers.
As fans arrive in waves for what could be a defining afternoon, one storyline is impossible to ignore: either Ronaldo or Croatia’s Luka Modric is likely to see their World Cup career end here.
Ronaldo, now 41, has another chance to record his first goal in the knockout rounds of the tournament. He is the first player to score in six different World Cups. but when matches matter most. he has not found the net. Portugal know exactly what that means: his ability to make the difference in a tight stage could be the difference between continuing and going home.
Modric is 40, and his own milestones have added weight to the occasion. Just over a week ago. he earned his 200th international cap for Croatia in a crucial win over Panama at the same stadium in Toronto. At second- and third-place finishes in the last two World Cups. he has already carried this kind of pressure before. and he is expected to remain the stabilising force in Croatia’s midfield against Portugal.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic believes the match will be decided around Modric. The rivalry also carries an emotional undertow: Vitinha pointed to the fact that the two midfield icons were once teammates at Real Madrid for six seasons.
“We have a lot of motives to have the ambition to want to win tomorrow. not just because of the World Cup. ” Vitinha said. “We individually and as a team. we want to win. we want to go to the next phase. for our whole country. for our parents. for our family. for our friends. for the Ugushta. and of course. for Cristiano as well.”.
Earlier, Vitinha also spoke about Modric as a person and the bond between the two players they share. “Luka Modric is a great reference for all football players and even more to me because he’s the centre midfielder. We have exchanged our jerseys,” he said. “He’s a great person from what I was able to share with him. Hopefully, tomorrow he’ll be a little bit sadder than me.”.
For both teams, the heat and the storm forecast sit side by side with a cleaner football question: who turns pressure into goals when the lights are brightest and the World Cup stage suddenly feels one game shorter for everyone involved.

Why cancel the broadcast, just turn the AC on lol
42C feels insane. But like… they still let people go to the stadium? Seems backwards. Also I swear the weather always picks on soccer fans.
So is this saying Ronaldo can’t play because of the heat or because the fans can’t watch outside? I got confused, like the article mentions Croatia too. Either way, Modric ending his career in Toronto sounds fake to me but what do I know.
I saw “humidity at kickoff” and thought it meant the players would be slick or something? They cancelled broadcasts at Nathan Phillips Square but Fan Festival still open with misting… okay so just bring your own water and hope for the best. Thunderstorm later too, cool cool. If anyone collapses that’s gonna be a mess, but also it’s the World Cup so everyone’s acting like it’s normal.
