Pierre Deny Dies at 69 After Sudden ALS

Pierre Deny, the French actor known to international audiences from Netflix’s Emily in Paris, has died at 69 after what his daughters called a sudden and severe case of ALS. He appeared in the series in 2022 and 2024 as Louis de Leon, the CEO of JVMA.
Pierre Deny was 69 when his daughters announced his death this Monday, May 25—after a sudden and severe battle with ALS, also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
The French actor, already respected at home, found wider international recognition through Netflix’s Emily in Paris. He appeared in the show in 2022 and returned in 2024, playing Louis de Leon, the CEO of the luxury fashion conglomerate JVMA.
In a statement shared via newswire AF, Deny’s daughters wrote: “It is with deep emotion that we announce the passing of Pierre Deny this Monday (May 25) following a sudden and severe case of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).”
That description—“sudden and severe”—has left many people searching for answers about the disease behind his final illness.
ALS. also known as Lou Gehrig Disease. is described by the Mayo Clinic as a progressive neurodegenerative illness that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. It typically begins with muscle twitching, weakness in the arms or legs, and trouble swallowing and/or slurred speech. Over time, symptoms worsen. There is no cure, and ALS is fatal.
It’s unclear exactly when Deny was diagnosed. What is clear is what his family emphasized in their message: the case was sudden and severe.
Deny’s career included work on stage and screen, beginning in the 1980s and growing into television roles. Beyond Emily in Paris, he was known for performances in Under the Sun, Une Femme d’Honneur, Cinq Soeurs, Plus Belle La Vie, and Tomorrow Is Ours.
After the news of his death broke in May 2026. Paul Forman—one of the series stars—paid tribute to his late co-star in an Instagram Stories message. “Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Pierre Deny,” Forman wrote. “It was a privilege to work alongside him and to witness his warmth and talent up close. Thinking of his family and loved ones. Rest in peace.”.
The story connects the milestones: a celebrated career in France, an international platform through Emily in Paris in 2022 and 2024, and then a final chapter marked by ALS—an illness that, according to medical guidance, steadily attacks the nervous system with no cure.
With Deny gone. the focus now shifts to the illness that took him—one that many people associate with sudden decline. but that the medical descriptions say is progressive in nature. beginning with early symptoms like muscle twitching and weakness. His daughters’ words leave the timing unknown, but the impact is immediate and deeply personal.

So sad. ALS is terrifying.
Wait it says sudden and severe but also ALS is progressive? So like did he not know until it was already too late or what. I feel bad for his family though.
Emily in Paris really hits different now. Louis de Leon was like the CEO guy right? Anyway, I saw somewhere it was caused by stress or something? Not sure if that’s true but it feels like that.
ALS has no cure so I’m not even surprised but the article keeps saying ‘sudden’ like that makes sense. If it’s progressive, then it wasn’t sudden, it was sudden to us maybe. Also Pierre Deny died at 69, Lou Gehrig was like 37 so… idk biology is weird. Rest in peace though.
