Photographer at Yankees-Angels game struck in head by foul ball, carted off field

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The game between the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels was delayed for about 10 minutes Wednesday evening after a foul ball struck a photographer in the head.

Yankees first baseman Ben Rice’s 79.5 mph line drive went down the first-base line into the camera well. Yankees players gathered on the far end of the dugout to check on the man, and team trainer Tim Lentych called for additional help from Angels trainers and paramedics.

Rice, with helmet and bat in hand, stood next to the camera well, watching as Park was treated. The photographer eventually walked to the medical cart on his own power, shaking Rice’s hand as he was fitted with a neck brace.

The photographer, Steven Park, was working for the Sporting Tribune, according to the Angels. The team said that according to the outlet, Park was doing OK afterward.

“Very relieved. I saw he was not ready for any kind of impact there,” Rice said. “He was looking the other direction, and I saw it hit him. I wasn’t sure how square it him in the head, but definitely a scary scene. I’m happy to hear that he’s OK.”

At the time of the incident, the Yankees led the Angels 1-0 in the top of the sixth inning. They went on to win the game 6-3 in 10 innings.
