Pete Crow-Armstrong caught a ball at Guarantee Rate Field, made the play, and kept moving. But the night’s most viral moment didn’t come from the highlight.
In the 5th inning, Crow-Armstrong exchanged vulgar words with a female Chicago White Sox fan. The incident, which spread widely online, brought immediate fallout for the Chicago Cubs centerfielder.
On Wednesday, the Cubs announced that Crow-Armstrong will be fined an undisclosed amount. Crow-Armstrong later apologized for his “choice of words” for what happened in the 5th inning, speaking on Monday.
“Directly or indirectly, I don’t think that any of the women in my life would think I would say those kinds of words regularly,” he said. “I’m just bummed out about the word choice and a bunch of little kids going to social media and seeing that as well.”
He avoided a suspension.
Crow-Armstrong’s apology came after a clear warning sign from the league’s recent history. A suspension was levied against Pirates players Tommy Pham and Dennis Santana for a similar altercation with a fan last June. Crow-Armstrong, in his own words, vowed to do better going forward.
“It’s just about being a little more respectful and killing someone with kindness instead of matching their level of intent,” he said.
What came next on the field didn’t erase the argument off it. After the incident, the Cubs went on to win the game 9-8.
Crow-Armstrong’s season has been a steady mix of production and development. He is batting .229 with 41 hits, 5 home runs, and 20 RBIs. He went 1-for-4 in a 5-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.
The Cubs, meanwhile, are 29-20 and have lost eight out of their last ten games. They are 3rd in the National League Central Division.
