NASA says the rover has surpassed a total distance of 26.2 miles since it landed on the red planet five years ago. The milestone was reached on June 14, and it comes with a detail that makes the achievement feel even sharper: the rover’s top speed reaches just 0.1 mph under the best conditions.
In an Instagram post, NASA wrote that Perseverance is only the second explorer to travel the distance of a marathon on another world, following NASA’s Opportunity rover, which accomplished the feat in 2015. The comparison is stark—Opportunity took 11 years and two months to cover the same distance.
The picture of Mars exploration looks different across NASA’s fleet. Curiosity, which has been on Mars since 2012, has driven just over 23 miles. Perseverance’s extra miles, NASA says, weren’t just about logging distance. The rover crossed the milestone while exploring intriguing. ancient terrain to the west of Jezero Crater. where the robotic geologist discovered the remnants of an ancient lake and possible signs of ancient life.
The rover has also been sending back fresh images from that western excursion, including a selfie—small proof that the long drive is still paired with the mission’s larger aim: finding what Mars used to be like, and whether it ever hosted the ingredients of life.
For now, Perseverance’s marathon on Mars is a reminder of how slow persistence can still add up to something historic—especially when every mile is earned at roughly the pace of a careful walk.
