On social media, a small package arrived and changed the conversation fast: several tech creators began posting photos of a Mac Mini with a simple message—“Officially joined the Mac mini club.” The thanks were directed at Perplexity.

Perplexity is gifting tech enthusiasts the industry’s latest status symbol. Demand for the Mac Mini has been “going wild” as AI tools take off. making it difficult to get one unless a person is on Perplexity’s radar. The AI startup has sent Mac Minis to some people so they can try Perplexity’s new technology.

The giveaway is tied to what Perplexity calls its “Personal Computer.” The company’s Personal Computer began rolling out in April. and Perplexity describes it as an expansion of its AI-powered browser agent. Perplexity Computer. The Personal Computer works across local files, native applications, and the web. As of Friday, it only runs in the Perplexity Mac app.

That Mac-only availability helps explain why Perplexity’s choice of hardware matters. For a Mac Mini user, the device isn’t just a desktop—it’s where Perplexity’s agent-based workflow can run.

A handful of content creators, mostly in the tech space, began posting in May, thanking Perplexity for sending them the desktop computer. One user captioned a picture of their device: “Officially joined the Mac mini club. Thanks to @perplexity_ai for sending this over.”

Perplexity confirmed to MISRYOUM that it gave a small number of Mac Minis to people “interested in getting the maximum use case out of Personal Computer in the Perplexity Mac app.”

The strategy isn’t unusual in consumer tech. Companies frequently seed products with creators so audiences can see the setup and hear the reaction. Perplexity is following a familiar playbook—one Meta used when it sent out Ray-Ban smart glasses for online unboxing and review.

Perplexity has also been building the Mac Mini pitch from its own side. In an April blog post. the company touted the Mac Mini as “one of the best ways to experience Personal Computer. ” writing that “On a mini. Personal Computer stays available 24/7 for work that needs a persistent machine or secure local access to your files and native apps.”.

Jesse Dwyer, Perplexity’s chief communications officer, told MISRYOUM he uses his Mac Mini constantly, operating it from his other Apple devices whenever and wherever.

The wider hardware backdrop is part of why this moment feels electric. Perplexity joins a wave of tech users gushing over the Mac Mini’s ability to run AI tools. including OpenClaw and Personal Computer. Apple CEO Tim Cook also pointed to the Mac Mini’s heightened demand and capabilities during a March earnings call.

Yet even as the hype grows, availability has tightened. Apple has struggled to keep the Mac Mini on shelves in recent weeks as more tech users catch on. On Apple’s website. the starting price of the Mac Mini rose in early May to $799 for a model with 512GB of storage. after the $599 base model with 256GB of storage was no longer available.

With Personal Computer rolling out and AI agents becoming more capable, the Mac Mini is increasingly being treated as a status symbol among power users—less a quiet appliance, more a visible signal that someone is ready to run the latest wave of tools.
