Pereira concussion scare after catch; Perez debuts Thursday

Pereira concussion – White Sox outfielder Jake Pereira suffered a concussion after a leaping catch that sent him into the wall, then walked off under his own power before being replaced in the eighth. With the team already making a move to refresh its outfield, the White Sox calle

In the seventh inning with two outs, the ball looked like it had Pereira’s number—deep to left-center, the kind of hit that usually turns into an extra-base guarantee.

But Pereira launched into an all-out leaping backhanded catch. The moment felt clean at first. Then it wasn’t. His face slammed into the wall.

He stayed down for several minutes after the play, motionless long enough for the tension in the stadium to change. Pereira eventually got up on his own power and walked off the field. In the eighth inning, he left the game for pinch-hitter Tristan Peters.

Manager Will Venable later delivered an update that mixed caution with relief. “Pereira is better today. He is banged up from last night. He is in good spirits and doing OK,” Venable said.

The injury also set off a second, immediate storyline for the White Sox: the call-up of Oscar Perez for his Major League debut against the Yankees on Thursday.

Perez was acquired by the White Sox on May 16 from the Athletics’ system in a deal for left-hander Jackson Nove. Before reaching the majors, he played 36 games for Triple-A Las Vegas this season. In Charlotte earlier this year, he posted a slash line of .230/.326/.432 with two home runs and seven RBIs across 20 games.

On Thursday, Perez is expected to hit eighth and play left field.

Venable framed Perez’s role as more than just filling space after an injury. “He is an above-average runner, defender on the corners and projects about average in center field,” Venable said. “Stolen bases are part of his game. He has plus power and makes plus decisions at the plate. He is very similar to Pereira.”.
