When Paul Pelosi’s brown convertible struck a legally parked car on a road in Yountville, a town in California’s wine country, it set off a chain of events that would end minutes later with deputies finding him with visible front-end damage.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said the collision happened Friday in Yountville, when Pelosi was driving his brown convertible and hit the parked car on the side of the road. Authorities say he briefly stopped, then drove away.
A witness saw the crash and called 911. Shortly afterward. sheriff’s deputies found Pelosi about a quarter of a mile away from the collision site. with damage to the front of his car. according to the sheriff’s office statement. The sheriff’s office said Pelosi told officers he knew he hit something. but was not sure when or what caused the damage.
No injuries were reported.
Pelosi, 86, did not have any alcohol in his system, the statement said. The sheriff’s office referred him to the Department of Motor Vehicles for a process to determine whether he may continue to drive, describing it as common for older drivers.
He was not arrested, and because no one was injured, the sheriff’s office recommended a misdemeanor charge for fleeing the scene of an accident.
The case lands at a time of renewed scrutiny for Pelosi. whose past DUI conviction in Napa County resurfaced in details provided by authorities. In 2022. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence in Napa County and was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation. He served only two days in jail and received good conduct credit for two other days. leaving one day to serve in a work program at the courthouse.
As part of his probation. Pelosi was required to attend a three-month drinking driver class and install an ignition interlock device that forces drivers to provide a breath sample before the engine will start. He was also ordered to pay about $5. 000 in victim restitution for medical bills and lost wages. along with nearly $2. 000 in fines.
That earlier case remains part of the backdrop to this weekend’s announcement, along with another attack the couple faced in San Francisco. In the same year as the DUI case, Paul Pelosi was attacked and severely beaten with a hammer at the couple’s San Francisco home.
Nancy Pelosi’s office did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment from a staffer, the report said.
For now, the sheriff’s office’s recommendation of a misdemeanor charge hinges on what comes next: the DMV process to determine whether Pelosi may continue driving, and any action that follows from authorities over the hit-and-run itself.
