Patriots scramble as OTAs threaten Boutte’s role

Patriots OTAs – New England’s busy offseason—highlighted by the additions of Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Kevin Byard and the potential trade for A.J. Brown—has created fresh pressure on Kayshon Boutte’s place in the Patriots’ receiving plans heading into training camp.

The Patriots earned their way to the Super Bowl, then came up flat against the Seattle Seahawks in the championship game. It was a brutal finish to a season New England had every reason to feel hopeful about.

But the offseason has brought a different kind of stress—one that could land directly on a single player’s shoulders as OTAs roll into the next phase of work. Head coach Mike Vrabel remains in his job. even as he’s been troubled by off-the-field issues involving a personal relationship with a media member. and the situation has already become a distraction. More questions could follow once the team arrives at training camp.

That same restless energy is showing up on the roster. New England has made multiple moves in free agency and the draft to improve the team for what’s ahead. and two of the biggest ripple effects—Romeo Doubs and the looming possibility of A.J. Brown—now point toward trouble for Kayshon Boutte’s starting status.

Doubs and Vera-Tucker look ready to start

The Patriots signed former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs and added left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. who came over from the New York Jets. Both Doubs and Vera-Tucker are expected to be starters next season. and the Patriots believe they can provide solid help for third-year quarterback Drake Maye.

New England’s defense and pass rush were upgraded too. The biggest signing was former Chicago Bears free safety Kevin Byard, who led the league with 7 interceptions last season. The Patriots also signed former Baltimore Ravens outside linebacker Dre’Mont Jones.

In the draft, the Patriots selected offensive tackle Caleb Lomu of Utah and edge rusher Gabe Jacas of Illinois with their first two picks. Wolf and Vrabel are hopeful that both rookies can contribute in the upcoming season.

For Boutte, the crowded receiver door is opening

On paper, New England’s wide receiver group got stronger with Doubs. In practice, the shift is bad news for Kayshon Boutte, because it creates a more realistic path for him to lose his position as one of the Patriots’ go-to targets.

The move isn’t framed as punishment for anything Boutte did wrong. The offseason acquisitions—Doubs now, and the possible addition of A.J. Brown—are being treated as evidence that Boutte may not be as vital in the passing game as he was last season.

The Patriots released Stefon Diggs, even after Diggs led the team with 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and had 4 TD receptions. That decision alone changed the room, and it also makes it harder for Boutte to count on a volume role by default.

Boutte’s numbers already suggest a drop-off is possible. He caught 33-551-6 last year. and he was also the team’s leading receiver in the postseason with 9-168-1 across four postseason games. Still. with Doubs added and Brown believed to be next. Boutte’s spot looks more precarious than it did when the season ended.

Brown could arrive in June, and the writing points to Philadelphia

New England has been rumored to acquire A.J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles. and the expectation is that the Patriots will complete a trade for Brown sometime in June. Brown spent his first three NFL years playing for Vrabel with the Titans and has been with the Eagles for the last four years. Around the league, he’s widely respected for toughness and big-play ability.

Both Byard and Doubs have indicated that Brown would be an excellent acquisition for the Patriots. Doubs said. “I have a ton of respect for him. ” adding. “He’s been a dude in this league for quite a long time. I understand that when he first got in the league, Vrabel was his coach. So again, I understand there are a lot of rumors going around. If he’s here, I’d love to have him here.”.

Brown’s production is part of why the chatter has stuck. Since moving to Philadelphia, he’s been one of the NFL’s most consistent receivers. He had 78 receptions for 1,003 yards and 7 touchdowns last season, which was his least productive season with the Eagles. In 2022, he caught 88-1,496-11. In 2023, he followed with 106-1,456-7. In 2024, he had 67-1,079-7 in 13 games.

What happens next to Boutte depends on whether the trade lands. But the situation around OTAs already feels pointed. Boutte did not attend Patriots spring practice, and he appears to understand his odds may be better in a trade for Brown than in building a bigger role in New England.

If the trade falls through, he could resume his place in the offense. But right now, the sense inside the situation is that the handwriting is on the wall.

There’s also pressure on DeMario Douglas’s snap share

Boutte isn’t the only receiver facing uncertainty as the Patriots reshape their group. New England could also be moving on from wideout DeMario Douglas.

Douglas was expected to be a prominent part of the offense. but he was involved in slightly more than one-quarter of the Patriots’ offensive snaps. He is a smaller wideout at 5-8 and 191 pounds and is set to be 25 years old. an age that should put him near his prime. Yet he was held to 31-447-3 last year. Douglas could be wearing a different uniform next season.

The Patriots may still have the chance to stabilize the receiver rotation before training camp fully answers the questions. But with Doubs in place, Diggs already gone, and Brown’s June move hanging over the roster, Boutte’s starting-job runway looks shorter than it has all offseason.
