Patriots’ Mike Vrabel reveals startling reality behind resting starters in preseason

Preseason football is usually a time for coaching staffs to evaluate their roster depth, but New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is treating his starters like fragile cargo for a very specific, and brutally honest reason.

During Saturday night’s 24-21 preseason victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, Vrabel deliberately kept starting quarterback Drake Maye and several other key veterans glued to the sideline. Without Maye taking snaps, New England relied heavily on its reserve arms to move the chains. Quarterback Tommy DeVito provided an early spark, launching a beautiful 69-yard touchdown bomb down the right sideline to wide receiver Kyle Williams. Later, with the game on the line in the fourth quarter, quarterback Behren Morton stepped up in the clutch. Morton connected with Nick DeGennaro on a 37-yard game-winning touchdown strike to officially secure the victory.

While the backup offense eventually found a rhythm, the defensive reserves drew Vrabel’s legendary ire early on. Deeply frustrated with a sluggish start in the first half, Vrabel actually burned a timeout specifically to rip into his unit on the sideline, bluntly calling their effort “dog s–t.”

That aggressive wake-up call highlighted exactly why Vrabel remains so fiercely protective of his starters. If the second-string unit struggles to execute basic fundamentals, the Patriots simply cannot afford to expose their primary playmakers to unnecessary exhibition injuries.
