Patriots eye Thibodeaux as edge depth thins

Patriots trade – With New England’s edge rush production lagging and its offseason depth chart looking thin, trade rumors have again pointed to Giants pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux as a possible Patriots fit.
The Patriots’ offseason has looked strong on paper—new weapons in the passing game, and upgrades in the secondary. But when it comes to turning pressures into sacks, New England still has a problem it can’t ignore.
Last season, the Patriots recorded just 35 sacks, putting them ahead of only six teams across the NFL. For a team trying to reshape its defense around speed off the edge, that number has a way of coming back to the same question: where does the next pass-rusher actually come from?
New England did add Dre’Mont Jones, signing the defensive lineman to a three-year, $39.5 million contract in March. But the Patriots also have to cover a gap left by K’Lavon Chaisson. He signed with the Commanders in free agency after posting 7.5 sacks with the Patriots last year.
And even if the roster looks more complete at other positions. the edge depth situation at this stage of the offseason raises concerns. New England’s 2026 second-round pick, Gabe Jacas, is not present at mandatory minicamp. Veteran Harold Landry Jr. is also carrying injury concerns. With those pieces missing—or not fully available—the Patriots’ edge group is looking thin.
That’s why trade chatter has returned to one name in particular: Giants pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Thibodeaux. who is 25 years old and was selected fifth overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. has been tied to multiple trade rumors throughout the offseason. The setup in New York is widely described as a rebuilding phase. and Thibodeaux—an athletic edge talent—has been viewed by some as a player whose role could change if the Giants are dealing.
There’s also the financial reality. Thibodeaux is on his fifth-year option and is currently commanding more than $14 million in salary. That number matters because it shapes what kind of deal makes sense.
One way to frame it: the Patriots could have reason to explore Thibodeaux as an edge boost if they believe they can use him differently than the Giants did in recent years. But there are also red flags. His game has been described as having stagnated over the last few years. and injuries have played a major role in that decline. Thibodeaux has missed 12 games over the last two seasons.
When he did play this past season, he fell down the Giants’ depth chart. In 10 games, he recorded 2.5 sacks with 25 total tackles and nine QB hits.
The contrast is stark with his 2023 production. During the 2023 season in New York, Thibodeaux recorded 11.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, and 16 QB hits over 17 games.
The possibility, then, isn’t simply about adding another name to the roster. It’s about whether New England can turn him into a more productive piece again—potentially in a more situational role—while helping address a pass rush that produced only 35 sacks in 2025.
Trade rumors have also pointed to personnel familiarity as one reason the fit could be discussed. Former Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is currently serving as a defensive analyst on Mike Vrabel’s staff in New England. a connection that has been part of the speculation linking Thibodeaux to the Patriots.
In the end. the Patriots’ offseason upgrades can’t fully paper over what happens when the quarterback isn’t pressured enough. With Chaisson gone. minicamp leaving questions about Jacas. and Landry Jr.’s injury concerns hanging over the edge depth chart. the search for more sacks isn’t just a talking point anymore. It’s turning into a specific roster need—and Thibodeaux is the kind of player whose name keeps resurfacing when teams start thinking in those terms.

So they’re gonna trade for Thibodeaux or what? I feel like every year it’s “edge depth is thin” lol.
35 sacks is bad?? I thought they were doing fine. Also if the guy from the Giants is “athletic” then that’s all that matters right. Not sure why they’re talking about injury minicamp stuff like that means anything.
Wait Harold Landry Jr is injured and Gabe Jacas wasn’t at minicamp so they’re scrambling? That seems like panic already. I don’t even know what Jacas does honestly, but if he’s gone then yeah trade for the big name. Thibodeaux is the only one they can talk about.
The article is basically saying they can’t sack the QB so they might grab a Giants guy… but isn’t Chaisson literally already on a new team now? feels like they should just sign somebody off the street instead of trading draft capital for a rebuild player from NY. And “mandatory minicamp” missing?? like everyone’s injured in spring, relax.
