Paramount blocked an ad attacking its Warner merger

Paramount blocked – A 30-second advertisement submitted by the Freedom of the Press Foundation for Paramount+’s UFC Freedom 250 broadcast was rejected by Paramount. The spot criticized Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery’s $111 billion merger agreement and alleged that
On Sunday night. Paramount+ aired UFC Freedom 250 in a setting that already felt like theater: mixed martial artists inside a massive cage on the White House lawn. staged for President Trump’s 80th birthday and the nation’s semiquincentennial. Viewers watching the livestream were hit with the spectacle—except for one missing piece.
A bruising 30-second ad criticizing Paramount’s $111 billion merger agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery never made it on air. The Freedom of the Press Foundation says Paramount refused to air the advertisement it submitted for the event.
The rejected spot begins with Trump calling journalists “the enemy of the people.” It then points to Trump-allied Paramount chairman and CEO David Ellison, suggesting Ellison could force CNN—the flagship Warner Bros. news network—to soften reporting on Trump and his administration.
The ad also highlights reporting from The New York Times in April about Ellison throwing a private party in Trump’s honor as Paramount awaited approval of its proposed takeover. which the Justice Department cleared on Friday. The spot quotes Scott Pelley. the correspondent recently fired from 60 Minutes after a backlash to changes at Paramount-owned CBS News that were overseen by Ellison and network editor-in-chief Bari Weiss. Pelley alleged that new executive leadership wanted him “to inject falsehoods and bias” into his reporting in an effort to “curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.”.
The foundation’s warning isn’t limited to corporate vibes—it leans into press freedom. The ad argues that if the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery deal proceeds, CNN journalists could face something similar to a corporate mandate. It ties the claim to Trump’s support for the acquisition and to a March comment from defense secretary Pete Hegseth: “The sooner David Ellison takes over that network. the better.”.
The ad’s voiceover ends with a blunt directive: “Let’s stop Trump’s censorship and block this merger.” An on-screen link directed viewers to a Freedom of the Press Foundation web page where they could send letters to congressional representatives demanding an investigation into “Trump-Paramount corruption.” (The source material also notes a disclosure: WIRED global editorial director Katie Drummond is on the FPF board of directors.).
Seth Stern. the Freedom of the Press Foundation’s chief of advocacy. called Paramount’s decision an affront to press freedom. “Ellison won’t air criticism of himself. his company. or his buddy Trump. ” Stern said in a statement about the rejected ad. He added that the effort is “bad for press freedom. bad for the public. and bad for Paramount—just look at CBS’s recent struggles under Ellison’s watch.” Stern referred to ongoing turmoil at the network since the Ellisons’ Skydance Media closed its acquisition of Paramount last August. He also said, “Billionaires who don’t respect the First Amendment should stay out of the news business.”.
Paramount, however, reportedly cited a conflict of interest as the reason it declined to air the ad. Stern rejected that explanation as hypocritical, pointing to close ties between the media giant, the Ellisons, and Trump. He said Paramount “apparently sees no conflict of interest in promising the Trump administration editorial concessions in exchange for merger approvals. in throwing fancy dinner parties honoring Trump while he attacks CBS and CNN journalists. or in airing a UFC event which functioned as an hours-long commercial for Donald Trump and Truth Social.”.
Neither the White House nor Paramount replied to a request for comment. CNN declined to comment on the matter.
Sunday’s UFC broadcast carried its own political undertone beyond what was on the screen. David Ellison appeared alongside Trump at the event, and Paramount secured exclusive broadcast rights for the sport in a seven-year, $7.7 billion deal last year.
Even with the ad pulled, the legal and political fight around the merger isn’t finished. The source material notes that state attorneys general can still sue to block Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, and that officials in California, New York, and other states are reportedly preparing to do just that. The deal’s close could still be delayed. potentially stretching through a crucial midterm election cycle—when Trump and his loyalists are expected to need as much positive press as possible.
For the Foundation and for viewers who never saw the message, the absence was the point. A spot meant to argue that a merger could reshape newsroom independence was cut from a live event that had already been turned into a megaphone for Trump-era celebration.

So they blocked the ad… shocking.
I didn’t even know Paramount+ could just refuse stuff like that. Sounds like they’re scared of what the ad was saying about CNN. Also UFC on the White House lawn? wild.
Wait, so the whole point is Trump called journalists “enemy of the people” and then Paramount got mad and blocked it? That’s basically censorship right? Or is it just like normal ad rules and the article making it sound bigger than it is. Either way if they’re messing with CNN then yeah that’s not good.
This is just another merger drama. I swear every time they combine companies it turns into media control. They mention Scott Pelley got fired from 60 Minutes and then try to say Paramount would force CNN to soften… but like did the Justice Department even clear the deal already? feels like they’re not stopping anything, just hiding one 30-second ad.
