Panthers quarterback reportedly involved in mid-practice training camp fight

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young reportedly found himself in the middle of a fight in Monday’s training camp practice.

The Athletic’s Joe Person reported on Aug. 10 that Young “took offense” to a play where safety Lathan Ransom tried to hit running back Jonathon Brooks during a run play.

Afterward, Person reported that there was a “big fight,” and that Young and cornerback Mike Jackson were “jawing,” and were “still jawing” a few minutes later. An offensive lineman also reportedly got involved at some point and someone was hit in the head.

Person said that after practice, Young, Jackson and fellow safety Nick Scott had “a long conversation.” Scott talked to reporters about the fight in his post-practice press conference.

“At this point in camp, there’s just a level of physicality that naturally happens,” Scott said Monday.

“Part of that is, you know, we haven’t seen a different color in a long, long time. The pads have been on, it’s hot and everything like that. So, that’s part of the game. You want it. But at the same time, there’s that aspect of protecting the team and guys that you’re going to need on Sunday, for sure.”

Scott followed that up by saying that he was not worried about the scuffle, and that he felt it was “starting to turn into something bigger than it is.”

“This is not like the sitcom of the Panthers,” the veteran safety said. “We’re having fun. Camp is going really well. And we’re a physical, a physical, physical team, and that’s what we love about this team. I feel like day in and day out, we bring it. And that’s what you want. You’d rather have guys talking about, ‘Hey, was that too much?’ Rather than ‘We got to turn it up a notch.’”

Panthers head coach Dave Canales opened his own press conference by calling Monday a “fantastic practice.”

He used “physical,” “competitive,” and “passionate” to describe the Aug. 10 session. When asked if he had a problem with the play that sparked the fight, Canales declined to answer in front of reporters.

“We’re not out here practicing for a different sport,” Canales said. “Our sport’s physical … but we can do it the right way.”

Young did not have a formal press conference Monday after he spoke to reporters following Sunday’s practice.

After not playing in the preseason-opening Hall of Fame game on Aug. 6, the Panthers’ starters will play in Carolina’s next exhibition this Saturday, Aug. 15, against the Buffalo Bills.

Kickoff for Saturday’s Panthers-Bills preseason matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m. from the new Highmark Stadium in Buffalo. The game will be the first-ever played at the recently completed venue.
