Christmas comes early as Palma begins putting up festive lights

Christmas has arrived early in Palma – at least for the city’s streets. Despite summer only just getting under way, workers have already begun installing the capital’s festive lights, with cherry pickers appearing across several neighbourhoods weeks after the hottest season began. For the past few days, crews have been putting up the traditional LED decorations along some of Palma’s busiest roads, including Carrer de 31 de Desembre and Jaume Balmes. The work once again starts months before the official Christmas lights switch-on, creating an
unusual contrast with the soaring summer temperatures. Palma City Council says the early start is deliberate. Officials explained that the installation process requires significant planning and time, with the aim of ensuring the festive displays are ready in every neighbourhood by the time the lights are officially switched on later this year. The council adopted the same approach last year, when work also began in June following an expansion of the city’s Christmas lighting programme. The additional decorations and wider coverage across more districts have
made the installation a larger logistical operation than in previous years. Traditionally, Christmas lights were installed towards the end of August or during September, with the official switch-on taking place in late November to coincide with Black Friday and the festive shopping season. But in Palma, the countdown to Christmas now begins long before summer is over – a sight that has become an increasingly familiar feature of the city’s streets.
