Paige Bueckers hit with technical foul after clapping

Paige Bueckers said she was stunned when she received a technical foul after clapping aggressively during a whistle late in the third quarter of the Wings’ 86-69 loss to the Atlanta Dream in College Park, Georgia.
When Paige Bueckers and the Dallas Wings ran out of chances at the Atlanta Dream on Friday night, the strangest moment didn’t come from a turnover or a missed shot. It came from a clap.
With under two minutes to play in the third quarter and the Wings trailing by three, Bueckers drove toward the hoop when the whistle blew. She began clapping aggressively, likely believing Atlanta had called a foul. Instead, she learned she’d been assessed a technical foul.
Bueckers reacted immediately, pleading her case on the floor. “Are you serious? I clapped, just like that.”
The game itself became another tough outing for Bueckers. who finished with seven points and 23.1% field goal shooting—both career lows for the 2025 No. 1 overall pick. Dallas, despite a stretch where everything could have swung, never found a lasting rhythm. The Dream won 86-69. Wings All-Stars Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale combined for nine points on 4-of-24 shooting from the floor.
Bueckers was not made available to the media after the loss, so her immediate reaction on the floor may be the last direct word from her for now.
At his postgame press conference, first-year head coach Jose Fernandez was asked about the technical foul—but he declined to elaborate. “I’m not gonna comment on that because I don’t wanna get fined,” Fernandez said.
Fernandez’s refusal underscored a bigger reality for Dallas early in the 2026 season: the Wings are still finding their footing. Their record is 3-3. and the early stretch has been “up-and-down. ” with adjustments tied to a first-year head coach’s scheme and players learning each other on the fly. Ogunbowale, in particular, joined the team late after overseas commitments.
But the schedule doesn’t slow down for a team trying to gel. Over the next two games, things get more demanding before the Wings can fully settle. Dallas will travel to Brooklyn to face the New York Liberty (3-2) on Sunday afternoon. then return home to host the reigning champion Las Vegas Aces Thursday. May 28.
For Bueckers. the technical foul will stand out most of all—not because it decided the game by itself. but because it landed in the middle of a moment she says was meant for something else entirely. She didn’t see a dispute brewing. She saw a call, and she clapped. The league saw something different.

So she got a tech for clapping?? That’s wild.
I mean if you’re clapping like the refs messed up then yeah they’re gonna flag it. But the article makes it sound like she was just reacting to a whistle. Either way, 86-69 is rough.
First-year coach wouldn’t talk cause he doesn’t wanna get fined, but he also should’ve just explained what they saw. Like how do you even call a technical off a clap?? My cousin says that means she was talking trash or something but idk.
Refs love doing this. Next thing you know they’ll call you for clapping at a free throw. Also her FG % low but the tech is what everyone remembers, so that’s kinda messed up. Kinda feels like league wants drama more than basketball.
