Padres closer Miller returns after family leave support

Mason Miller missed three games earlier this week after being placed on the Bereavement/Medical Family Leave List due to a difficult family matter. Returning for the Padres’ weekend series against the Texas Rangers, the closer spoke to reporters after Saturday

When Mason Miller walked back into the rhythm of game day. it wasn’t just another Saturday for the San Diego Padres. Earlier this week. the team had to make room for a personal crisis: Miller was away as he dealt with a difficult family matter. and he missed the Padres’ series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The closer was placed on the Bereavement/Medical Family Leave List and sat out three games before rejoining the team for their weekend series against the Texas Rangers.

Miller said he wanted to keep the situation private while he handled it. But after Saturday’s game—when he recorded a save—he spoke to reporters about what it meant to come back into a clubhouse that showed up for him. His appreciation was direct, and it filled the spaces between the words.

“The guys are really supportive,” Miller said. “… The coaching staff, training staff, players in this locker room and everybody not only has my back, but everybody in this room has each others too. So it’s just really special when you get that opportunity to lean into those people around you.”

Even while he was away, Miller wasn’t going quiet on baseball. He kept working so that the return would feel prepared, not improvised. He continued throwing and staying sharp, focused on being ready when he got back to the mound.

“I have resources at home, some facilities there,” Miller said. “Just tried to stay ready and not come back unprepared, because that’s not fair to anybody here.”

What makes his week land harder is that Miller has become the kind of closer teams build late-season confidence around. Since coming to San Diego. he has been described as the best closer in baseball. and he has carried that label into what has been a career season. He has thrown 31 innings with an ERA of 0.87, and he’s gone 20-for-20 in save chances.

His performance has also drawn National League Cy Young attention earlier in the year. Miller’s impact goes beyond results, too—former stars have even said he is the most unhittable relief pitcher in baseball history, a claim tied to the work he puts in each time out.

There’s also the bigger story beyond the bullpen door. Since being traded to the Padres last summer, Miller has talked about wanting to remain in San Diego long-term. Earlier this year, he said he was open to an extension with the team, though nothing concrete has moved.

“No, that hasn’t been really discussed,” Miller told Padres On SI in an exclusive conversation. “I think they’ve hinted at some interest in it. but to your point. they do have me for the next three years also. so this isn’t something that’s like. ‘This guy’s out of here in a year and a half or this season.’ So I think there’s some comfort in that.”.

Miller has three more years of arbitration eligibility before he can hit free agency in 2030. But if it’s up to him, that future won’t necessarily take that path, and the two sides can come together on a new deal.

For now, the most immediate shift is simpler: after three missed games and a return marked by a save, Miller is back—with the same arm, and with a reminder that the clubhouse mattered just as much while he was away.

  1. Bereavement/medical leave list? I didn’t even know MLB had that. Hope his family is okay though. Glad he’s back for the Rangers.

  2. Honestly I thought they sent him down to AAA or something. Like “missed 3 games” makes it sound like he got benched. But if it’s family stuff then yeah don’t blame him. Still weird that they can be back that fast.

  3. This is sweet and all but the article kinda lost me halfway, it kept saying “Saturday” like 5 times lol. Also it says he wanted privacy but then reporters got his whole speech? Anyway, I’m glad the team supported him, that part matters more than the Rangers/Cardinals timeline.
