Padres’ Casey Mize brushes off injury scare from falling down dugout stairs

Padres starting pitcher Casey Mize would speak about his injury scare after slipping down the dugout steps during his last start.

With the San Diego Padres looking to make a playoff push, the team is awaiting any injury updates, specifically to their pitching staff, as one player is dealing with the effects of a bizarre turn of events. As the Padres are dealing with injury updates, the latest comes from pitcher Casey Mize, who slipped down the dugout steps on Saturday and is dealing with an ankle injury.

This would happen between the second and third innings of Mize’s start on Saturday against the Minnesota Twins, and while he convinced manager Craig Stammen to stay in the game, his fastball went from 94 miles per hour (mph) to as low as 90 mph. X-rays would reveal no fractures in his ankle, with Mize saying his ankle is “sore,” according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

“It’s a little swollen, tender, but woke up pretty encouraged with how I’m feeling. We’re just going to treat it a ton, do a lot of exercises, and then reevaluate — I think probably daily. But a little bit encouraged on how I’m waking up feeling today,” Mize said on Sunday.

More on Padres’ Casey Mize and his injury

Mize has started four games with the Padres ever since being traded from the Detroit Tigers before the deadline, as there’s no doubt frustration from the injury, especially with how it was sustained.

“I’ll be a little bit limited today in what I can do,” Mize said. “But we’re going to make sure I’m doing as much as I can to continue to make sure the rest of my body is in the best shape and prepared to go out there and make the start.”

“So, yeah, still shooting to make the next one. But like I said, we’re going to reevaluate that every day and see where we’re at. But I’m optimistic about where we’re at,” Mize continued.

With Mize talking about his next scheduled start, it’s currently set for Friday, Aug. 28 against the Tampa Bay Rays, though it remains to be seen if the pitcher will make it, as the team is 70-60, putting them second in the NL West.
