Padres 5, Brewers 1: Luis Rengifo socks grand slam. You read that right.

play

The Milwaukee Brewers continue a West Coast swing by taking on the San Diego Padres on Aug. 11 at Petco Park.

Follow along for live updates as Kyle Harrison (9-2, 2.84) opposes Walker Buehler (6-5, 5.07) in the starting pitching matchup.

Luis Rengifo hits grand slam in disaster second

For a brief second, it appeared the Brewers might have a triple play on their hands in the bottom of the second. Instead, they didn’t even get a double play and it proved costly.

On a chopper right to the bag with runners on first and second, David Hamilton stepped on third and threw to second. A clean exchange would have given the Brewers a chance to nab the slow-footed Luis Campusano at first.

But Ji-Hwan Bae, making his first start for Milwaukee, muffed the low throw from Hamilton. Two batters later, Jake Cronenworth doubled on a two-strike sinker, a pitch Harrison usually doesn’t throw.

Two batters after that, the real damage came: Rengifo, who was horrendous for two-plus months for Milwaukee, driving a four-seamer out for a grand slam.

Rengifo batted .205 with an abysmal .534 OPS with the Brewers before being released in June, but, naturally, has mashed for the Padres, entering the day with an .837 OPS. He now has three homers with San Diego — three more than he had in 209 plate appearances in Milwaukee.
