RCDSB to add nature-based spaces in 2026–27

The board said it plans to further integrate outdoor learning into kindergarten programming beginning in the 2026-27 school year. “Renfrew County District School Board is a leader in outdoor learning and environmental education,” said Kristen Niemi, RCDSB chief executive officer. “These outdoor learning spaces will enhance the rich learning opportunities that many RCDSB educators are already providing to their students.” Research cited by the board suggests nature-based learning can contribute to reduced anxiety, increased classroom engagement and stronger feelings of safety and belonging among students.
The Re-Nature program was inspired by the work of Adam Bienenstock, founder of Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, whose company has created thousands of nature-based play and learning environments around the world. “If we are asking children to reduce screen time, we must provide meaningful alternatives that support their mental health, learning, and connection to nature,” said Bienenstock.

Okay but will they still have enough teachers if kids are outside all the time?
This sounds nice but I can’t help thinking it’s just a fancy way to avoid indoor classroom stuff. Like, reduced anxiety? My kid gets anxiety from bullies, not from trees. Also 2026-27 is forever away.
Wait so they’re basically copying that Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds thing? I saw a TikTok about it and the lady said it fixes ADHD or something lol. Not saying it’s bad, just seems like too much credit for “nature” when home life is the real problem.
Schools be like ‘reduce screen time’ but then they still give kids worksheets. Nature spaces won’t stop kids from being on tablets if the parents do it. Also I don’t get how being outside makes them feel “safe and belonging” automatically… unless it’s like less recess drama or whatever.
