Oscar Winner Malcolm Clarke Explores Shenzhen in New Documentary

Two-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Malcolm Clarke has turned his analytical lens toward southern China in a new cinematic project examining one of the world’s most rapidly evolving urban centers.
Titled Shenzhen: People Who Build the Future, the documentary looks past familiar city skylines and standard narratives of economic expansion to focus on the human element driving the metropolis. Clarke serves as both writer and narrator for the production, guiding viewers through the personal trajectories of seven distinct individuals spanning multiple generations.

The featured subjects encompass a cross-section of the city’s diverse inhabitants, ranging from the early pioneers who established the original infrastructure to contemporary technology innovators working in advanced fields like robotics and high-performance supercars. The narrative also highlights international educators operating within the region alongside artists dedicated to carrying traditional Chinese culture to international audiences.
Through Clarke’s perspective, the documentary aims to document the determination, adaptability, and inventive spirit characterizing a municipality where the future is framed as something constructed through physical effort and steady enterprise.

The project represents a collaborative effort between Shenzhen Media Group and the acclaimed director. Alongside this feature release, the production group has also rolled out promotional material for upcoming international events, including themed musical compositions tied to regional hosting duties for international economic forums.
The documentary adds to Clarke’s extensive body of work in documentary filmmaking, bringing an outsider’s investigative approach to a city that has transformed from a manufacturing hub into a global capital for technology and innovation over recent decades.
