Orioles welcome Padres as Machado struggles at Camden Yards

Orioles vs – After an emotionally rough stretch against the Mariners, the Orioles start a new home week with Manny Machado and a Padres team in free fall. San Diego began the year strong at 31-20, but has gone 4-12 over its last 16 games, including two sweeps by the Philli

Baltimore is used to big moments at Camden Yards. This week, it arrives with a different kind of pressure—one built not on a win streak, but on what the Orioles can do to pull a slumping opponent further off balance.

The Orioles open a West Coast series against Manny Machado and the San Diego Padres after an emotionally challenging run against the Mariners. For the Padres, the contrast is stark. San Diego started the year 31-20, then slid into an epic cold streak. Over their last 16 games. the Friars are 4-12. having been swept twice by the Phillies. while also dropping series to the Mets and Nationals.

San Diego is still carrying a small lift into Baltimore. The Padres walked off the Reds on a Fernando Tatis Jr. homer to take their series vs. Cincinnati.

But the real storyline in this matchup is Machado’s form. The seven-time All-Star—once a steady centerpiece for San Diego—has been going through what’s described as the worst start of his career. The 3B is slashing .172/.253/.345 (.597 OPS) while striking out in 25.6% of his ABs. For all the volatility, his power has not disappeared. Machado still leads the Padres with 11 HRs and 34 RBIs. What has fallen off is everything that comes with contact: he has the worst batting average and the second-worst on-base percentage among qualified hitters in all the majors.

That’s where the Orioles’ pitching staff could change the mood quickly. Machado has looked different against Baltimore. He’s posting a .278 average and .871 OPS with four HRs in 13 games vs. the O’s. Last time he visited Camden Yards in 2024. he destroyed the Orioles in the second game of the series. going 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in a 9-4 Padres win.

The Orioles, meanwhile, have a complicated recent history with San Diego. Since Major League Baseball changed its schedule format in 2023 so every team plays each other each season. Baltimore has gone 5-4 against the Padres and dropped two of the three games at Camden Yards. Last season. the Orioles did manage to sweep the Padres in Petco Park in the beginning of September. led by Jeremiah Jackson. Colton Cowser. Emmanuel Rivera and Coby Mayo.

The series begins Friday, June 12 at 7:05pm ET.

Game 1: Shane Baz vs. Griffin Canning

Probable pitchers are RHP Shane Baz (3-6, 4.09 ERA, 66 Ks) for the Orioles and RHP Griffin Canning (0-4, 6.34 ERA, 33 Ks) for the Padres.

Baz has been battling Brandon Young for the title of hottest pitcher in the Orioles’ rotation. His recent rhythm got interrupted last weekend in Toronto after the Ernie Clement base-running fiasco saw Baz give up four unearned runs in a 6-4 Orioles loss. In his last five starts, Baz is sporting a 2.20 ERA, a .218 batting average against, with 28 Ks in 32.2 IP.

Baz has faced the Padres twice in his career and put together good starts both times. In 2024, he posted 5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 3 BB and 4 Ks in an 11-4 Rays win at the Trop. Last year, in San Diego, Baz delivered seven shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out six.

Across from him is longtime former Angel Griffin Canning. The 30-year-old got off to a rough start, allowing 13 ER in his first 11 IP. His last four outings look more respectable, with a 4.15 ERA. He’s coming off his best start of the year. holding his former team. the Mets. at bay with a line of 5 IP. 3 H. 1 ER. 2 BB and 6 K.

At Camden Yards, the Orioles have made Canning pay. In three career starts there, Baltimore has lit up Canning to the tune of a 7.20 ERA, a .323 average against and a 1.035 OPS against.

Game 2: Trey Gibson vs. Randy Vásquez

Saturday, June 13 at 4:05pm ET brings the second matchup. Probable pitchers are RHP Trey Gibson (1-1, 4.24 ERA, 5 Ks) for Baltimore and RHP Randy Vásquez (5-4, 3.63 ERA, 53 Ks) for San Diego.

Gibson, a rookie, will make his third career start. He’s filling in for the injured Chris Bassitt. He came up as a strikeout artist in the minor leagues, but in the big leagues he has leaned into getting hitters to hit the ball on the ground.

His 52.5% ground ball rate in 17 IP rivals that of top ground ball pitchers like José Soriano and George Kirby. and that could create a favorable matchup. The Padres have the second-highest ground ball rate in the majors at 44.8%. though they don’t ground into a ton of double plays. with the eighth fewest in MLB.

Gibson will try to build on a solid start last time out, even if it wasn’t flashy. He went 4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB and 0 K vs. the Mariners.

Vásquez is a 27-year-old control-oriented pitcher from the Dominican Republic. He’s building on a strong 2025 and a strong start to his 2026 season. His 3.63 ERA is almost three runs lower than his xERA (6.54), meaning this year’s results have come with a bit of good fortune attached.

What’s been clearer: his road track record has been stingy. He’s posted a 1.82 road ERA this season, compared to a 4.99 ERA in Petco Park.

Vásquez has already had one Camden Yards lesson. In one previous outing at the ballpark, the result was one of the worst starts of his career. The Padres’ right-hander started Game 3 of the 2024 series against the O’s. posting a line of 2+ IP. 4 H. 6 ER. 4 BB and 2 K. He was chased from the game in the third inning after giving up three singles. three walks and four runs without getting an out.

Game 3: Trevor Rogers vs. Walker Buehler

Sunday, June 14 at 1:35pm ET closes the set with LHP Trevor Rogers (3-6, 6.15 ERA, 44 K) for Baltimore and RHP Walker Buehler (3-3, 4.33 ERA, 53 Ks) for San Diego.

Rogers has lived through the kind of inconsistency that can rattle a rotation—and the fans notice it. The Opening Day starter has looked great at times, then been lit up like “Fourth of July fireworks” in others. May was especially rough. After coming off the IL on May 12th, Rogers posted a 10.31 ERA in four starts. June has been slightly better. including 5.2 innings of one-run ball against the Red Sox. and his last time out against the Mariners when he tossed 5.2 innings and allowed three runs.

He hasn’t faced the Padres since 2024, when he was still with the Marlins. That afternoon saw Rogers pitch 5.1 innings with 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB and 3 Ks.

Rogers has also tended to do well in interleague play, posting a career 3.36 ERA against the opposite league.

Buehler is another starter who started roughly but has gained momentum in recent starts. Over his first seven outings, he had a 5.64 ERA and allowed a .276 average against. Since then, he’s posted a 3.09 ERA over 32 IP while allowing a .237 BAA in six starts. He’s coming off back-to-back starts of one-run ball against the Phillies and Reds.

Buehler’s Camden Yards history is brief but memorable. He has just one career appearance there, dating to 2019, when he dominated the rebuilding O’s with seven shutout innings while striking out 11 Orioles.

The one piece of good news for Baltimore: Pete Alonso has dominated Buehler throughout his career. Alonso is 5-for-15 with four homers and 8 RBIs against him.

The Orioles and Padres are scheduled to meet at Camden Yards with something tangible at stake: Machado’s season slump. Baltimore’s chance to turn that slump into innings. and a home series that can still tilt either direction fast—especially when a former Oriole has already shown he can change a game with one swing.
