Orioles explode early, rout Red Sox 8-2

Orioles beat – Coby Mayo’s bases-clearing double capped a six-run first inning and the Baltimore Orioles cruised to an 8-2 win over the Boston Red Sox on Thursday, June 4, 2026, in Boston.

BOSTON — The game barely reached the first inning before it slipped out of the Red Sox’s hands.

Baltimore loaded the frame with damage right away, scoring six runs in the first inning and turning the rest of Thursday’s matchup into a rout. The Orioles left Boston with an 8-2 win after Coby Mayo capped the burst with a bases-clearing double.

Taylor Ward was the spark in that opening stretch. collecting three hits that included a leadoff double and an RBI single. The six-run inning matched the Orioles’ most runs in a single frame this season. Every bit of it landed with momentum: Adley Rutschman extended his on-base streak to 15 games on an RBI single. a run shy of his longest career streak.

Leody Taveras added another RBI in the first, and all but one run in the inning came with two outs. Carlos Narváez helped keep Boston from digging out further, getting the Red Sox out of the inning with a successful ABS challenge—his eighth strikeout gained via ABS.

The Orioles kept building separation. Samuel Basallo drove in another run in the fifth with an RBI double, and Colton Cowser added a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 8-0.

On the mound, Trevor Rogers carried a no-hitter into the fifth. He surrendered one run while striking out five.

For Boston, Willson Contreras drove in the only two runs with a sixth-inning RBI single and later added a ninth-inning 403-foot homer.

Brayan Bello, meanwhile, continued to struggle as a starter. He allowed seven hits and eight runs in five innings and now owns a 9.68 ERA in 30 2/3 innings when starting. As a reliever, he has a 0.71 ERA in 25.1 innings.

Offensively, Baltimore’s big start wasn’t a one-off. The Orioles have scored six runs in a frame three times this season, with the last coming on April 22 against the Kansas City Royals.

Boston’s season has tilted in a different direction since a managerial change. The Red Sox are 16-18 since Chad Tracy replaced Alex Cora as manager.

The Orioles now head back on the road to Toronto for the next part of their trip, where Brandon Young (3-1, 3.35) is set to start. The Blue Jays have not named a starter.

Boston, meanwhile, is set to head to Yankee Stadium for the first time this year, with Sonny Gray (6-1, 3.06) taking the hill opposite Ryan Weathers (2-3, 3.52).

  1. I saw Coby Mayo and thought he was like a bench guy lol. But apparently he just wrecked them with that double?? Also Trevor Rogers basically owned them.

  2. Chad Tracy replacing Alex Cora or whatever… so the Orioles are winning because the manager change? Like baseball is that simple? I don’t really trust the stats either, 8-2 could be fluky.

  3. Orioles already scoring 6 in an inning like 3 times?? That’s insane. Also the article says the ABS challenge got 8th strikeout via ABS, which sounds made up? Then Contreras hits a homer like late and everyone pretends it mattered.
