Original Days Of Thunder Star Goes Off On Tom Cruise And ‘Horrible’ Anne Hathaway Sequel Casting
One of the stars of the first Days of Thunder movie is very against Anne Hathaway starring in the sequel alongside Tom Cruise.
Not everyone was over the moon that the Tom Cruise-led Days of Thunder sequel has cast The Devil Wears Prada 2 star Anne Hathaway, including one of the stars of the original movie, Randy Quaid.
His rants began on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2026, on X, formerly Twitter. Quaid criticized the decision not to have fellow iconic actress Nicole Kidman return as Dr. Claire Lewicki, who is 16 years older than Hathaway. His biggest gripe, however, was that Hathaway is pregnant.
“We need Nicole back. Don’t be a p***y, [Tom Cruise],” Quaid first said. “You need the original girl. It’s not personal; it’s filmmaking. Anne isn’t sexy, because and if you haven’t noticed, she’s pregnant.”
He didn’t stop there. Quaid followed that post up with another, claiming that if it were up to him, the “real sequel” would reunite Cruise and Kidman, saying, “We don’t need a new girl; we need a new race car!”
Finally, he concluded with one last attack on Hathaway. He claimed that Hathaway being cast in the Days of Thunder sequel was a “horrible choice.”
“Anne Hathaway is a leftist, woke, horrible choice for Days of Thunder[‘s] NASCAR audience who are MAGA,” Quaid wrote. “The sexy older chick for Tom in this film needs to be Nicole. That’s the casting that would sell the idea.
“It’s interesting because when we made the first one[,] there was also a rush to get it out; editors slept in the cutting room on shifts. This is a weird thing, like they want it to come out and tank,” he added.
Will it tank like Quaid is predicting? It’s too early to tell. Cruise’s last similar legacy sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which came out 36 years after the first movie, was a bigger hit than its predecessor. It grossed nearly $1.5 billion on a $177 million budget. Similarly, the sequel recast its female lead, replacing Kelly McGillis with Jennifer Connelly.
Hathaway also starred in a legacy sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, earlier this year. It also outgrossed its predecessor, making almost $700 million worldwide. She also starred in the second-highest-grossing movie of the year, The Odyssey ($1.5 billion).
