The Edmonton Oilers signed goaltender Frederik Andersen in NHL free agency this summer. Fresh off winning a Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes, Andersen hopes to have the same success with the Oilers. However, his debut with his new team may be delayed.
Andersen is going to miss the beginning of training camp, Edmonton announced on Wednesday. He is not alone in this, either. He is one of four players who will not be at camp with the Oilers when it begins next month.
Andersen and forward Matt Savoie suffered injuries over the offseason that require time away from the ice. Meanwhile, forward Mattias Janmark and defenseman Alec Regula are still recovering from previously sustained injuries.
Andersen is certainly the most notable name here for hockey fans. The veteran netminder, as previously mentioned, won the Stanley Cup this summer with the Hurricanes. He was dominant for most of the run, as well. Carolina went unbeaten in its first eight playoff games. And they lost just three games the entire postseason.
The veteran netminder spent the last five seasons with Carolina. In that time, he ranked top 10 in the NHL for Goals Saved Above Expected, according to HockeyStats.com. He helped the Hurricanes make three appearances in the Eastern Conference Finals in addition to the Cup win in 2026.
The Oilers are hoping Andersen can bring that sort of success to their team. Unfortunately, Edmonton is going to need to wait a bit before they see him on the ice. Hopefully, the injury is nothing major, and the veteran netminder can return sooner rather than later.
