Oilers add Devon Levi, trade for third-round pick

The Edmonton Oilers acquired goaltender Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for a 2028 third-round pick, adding a 2028 seventh-round pick as part of the deal.
When Edmonton made the move for Devon Levi. it wasn’t a splashy. headline-only gamble—it was a depth decision with real upside attached. The Oilers announced Wednesday that they have acquired Levi from the Buffalo Sabres along with a 2028 seventh-round pick from Buffalo. sending back a 2028 third-round pick.
Levi is 24, and the past stretch of his development has largely taken place in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. He last played NHL action on Jan. 20, 2025.
Last season, Levi played a career-high 52 games with Rochester, posting a 23-20-9 record. He finished with a 2.83 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage. He also appeared in three games during the Calder Cup Playoffs. going 1-2 with a 2.71 GAA and a .919 save percentage in a first-round series loss against the eventual champion Toronto Marlies.
Before his pro path, Levi stood out at every level. He was selected by the Florida Panthers 212th overall in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft, then was traded to the Sabres in 2021 as part of the deal that sent Sam Reinhart to Florida.
Over 39 games with Buffalo across three seasons, Levi posted a 17-17-2 record with a 3.29 GAA and a .894 save percentage.
Even with the trade landing on an NHL roster timeline, it’s the type of goaltender Levi has been for years that frames the bet: he won the Mike Richter Award as NCAA goaltender of the year back-to-back in 2022 and 2023 with Northeastern.
The Oilers’ message is clear through what they’re willing to give up and what they’re willing to bet on next—Levi’s contract status isn’t the point here. It’s that Edmonton is looking for another real option between the pipes. and the numbers he put up in Rochester and his history of elite form in college give the move a reason to believe it could pay off.
