HOUSTON, Texas — Crews along the Houston Ship Channel are working to contain an oil spill reported Sunday at the PEMEX Deer Park location, according to a message.
The refinery said, via a message on the Community Awareness Emergency Response system (CAER), that it experienced a diesel spill to the Houston Ship Channel. The leak site has been isolated, at least for now, and the incident is being treated as something contained rather than spreading.
PEMEX Deer Park added that its oil spill team is working to deploy oil booms to help contain the spill. So far, the company said all the appropriate agencies have been notified. Around this kind of response, there’s usually a lot of waiting and recalibrating—actually, even hearing the word “booms” makes it sound like things can move fast, even if they don’t always.
At this time, the refinery said it is not aware of any impact on the community or industrial neighbors. That part is still open-ended, though, because “not aware” is not the same as “ruled out.”
