OCFA races to cool tank threatening MMA blast zone

OCFA races – Garden Grove firefighters are monitoring an overheating chemical tank at GKN Aerospace that could leak toxic MMA or explode. With more than 50,000 people evacuated, OCFA is using drones every 10 minutes to track the tank’s temperature while OCFA leaders bring
The tank at GKN Aerospace kept getting hotter, and the timeline started shrinking.
In Garden Grove. firefighters and emergency teams have been working to stop a chemical catastrophe that could come in two forms: a leak of MMA. a toxic chemical. or an explosion. OCFA says the tank is at imminent danger. and for days now the response has been measured in minutes and temperatures instead of promises.
Firefighters are using drones to monitor the tank’s temperature every 10 minutes. OCFA officials say their priority is keeping the tank cool—buying experts more time to develop a solution.
That urgency has reshaped ordinary life across the area. More than 50,000 people have been evacuated from their homes in Orange County.
OCFA says the response now includes specialists from multiple agencies. including subject matter experts. chemists. and scientists working around the clock. “Resources with all different agencies. We’ve got subject matter experts, chemists, scientists. We’re all working around the clock, trying to find the best solution,” said Wayhowe Huang with OCFA.
OCFA Chief Craig Covey tied the operation to two goals: protecting residents’ homes and preventing harm to the environment. “The next phase has been preventing further movement of anything. If it comes out of the tank into the waterways and possibly out to the ocean. we want to protect the environment. ” Covey said.
As teams try to keep the tank from worsening, OCFA also released a visual warning to the public. In a post on social media, OCFA Division Chief Nick Freeman and Dr. CK. the Orange County Health Officer. shared a potential blast map showing how nearby neighborhoods could be affected if the tank explodes. Officials said the points on the map could change by the morning.
Covey described why the temperature is rising inside the tank. connecting it to the chemical process rather than an immediate external fire. “So we think it’s doing its normal curing process. Anything that does this, like cement does, even cement is warm in the middle as it’s curing. That’s part of the chemical process. It creates heat as it is forming itself,” Covey said.
So far, there have been no injuries reported. What triggered the overheating in the first place remains unclear.
