NYPD says 63 arrests follow Knicks title celebrations

NYPD reveals – New York’s NBA championship parade is months away, but the city’s celebrations already turned tense. The NYPD says 10 officers were injured after Knicks fans celebrated the franchise’s first NBA title in more than 50 years, including an officer struck by a gla

New York’s championship joy hit a hard wall on Saturday night. The Knicks had just won the NBA Finals over the San Antonio Spurs, delivering the franchise its first title since 1973. For many fans, it was a moment to pour into the streets.

For the NYPD, it was the start of a long night of arrests.

At least 63 people were arrested after Game 5, according to the New York Post. The same report said that, amid the mayhem, 10 members of the NYPD were injured, including one officer who was struck by a glass bottle.

Knicks watch parties during the Finals weren’t the first time the NYPD had to step in. Throughout the series, arrests had been made during postgame celebrations, and confrontations between fans and NYPD officers had followed watch parties. There were also reports of property damage.

On Saturday night, the situation turned violent as the game ended. The charges, as described by the New York Post, included assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a gun, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of governmental administration.

In a statement to Gothamist, the NYPD said fights broke out as the game wore on and continued after the final buzzer. Some incidents involved fans, while others involved law enforcement officers trying to keep the peace.

“As the game progressed and then following the game, the crowds became increasingly destructive, and there were many incidents of incredibly reckless and dangerous behavior,” the NYPD said.

The championship itself reshapes New York sports history. The Knicks won the NBA Finals on Saturday over the San Antonio Spurs, securing their first championship since 1973. New York’s last NBA Finals appearance came in 1999, when the Knicks lost to the San Antonio Spurs.

Now the city is preparing for the next wave of festivities—one that brings new scrutiny. On Thursday, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a ticker-tape parade for the Knicks, following Game 5. Sunday brought additional information from the city about security for the parade. setting the stage for how New York plans to keep the celebrations from tipping again into chaos.

The Knicks’ title celebration delivered a historic win. But the NYPD’s account of arrests, injuries, and charges leaves a clear message for what comes next: New York’s biggest moments also demand the city’s toughest control.

  1. So they’re saying 63 got arrested but no talk about who started it? Sounds like cops always do the most.

  2. 10 officers injured is wild. I bet those “celebrations” were just people drinking and acting surprised when the cops showed up.

  3. Wait was the officer struck by a gla… like glass? That’s not even normal fan behavior, that’s just dumb. Also why were they arresting for gun possession like right after the game?

  4. This is why parades get delayed, everyone thinks it’s a free for all. Also the ticker-tape parade thing—aren’t they basically just gonna recreate the same chaos but with more permits? I swear every big sports moment in NY turns into a fight at some point.
