NYC sends outreach teams to MSG during heat alert

With a “Code Red” heat emergency expected around Madison Square Garden and Penn Station, New York’s Department of Homeless Services plans a major outreach push from July 2 through July 4—using about 200 two-person teams to warn unhoused people, encourage shelt
Madison Square Garden is gearing up for Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding weekend, but New York officials are preparing for a different kind of pressure building right outside the gates: heat.
A NYC official with direct knowledge says the Department of Homeless Services will deploy a “significant force” around the MSG and Penn Station area from July 2 through July 4. The increase in outreach workers, the official says, isn’t about clearing the neighborhood for wedding festivities.
It’s about the weather. Temperatures are forecast to climb into the 90s and possibly hit 100 degrees. and officials are especially focused on the Penn Station corridor—one of the city’s largest homeless hubs. The window of concern is the stretch from noon to 8 PM. when the heat is expected to be at its worst and wedding activity around MSG will be at its busiest.
About 200 two-person outreach teams will fan out across the city, with a major focus on the blocks surrounding MSG. Their job is to warn unhoused people about the city’s “Code Red” heat emergency and encourage them to head to shelters or cooling centers.
If someone declines, the outreach workers can’t force them to move. Instead, they’ll keep offering options—one of them spending time inside nearby Penn Station to escape the sweltering temperatures.
The planning comes as the wedding weekend itself continues to take shape. Taylor and Travis are transforming MSG into what’s been described as a real-life fairy tale, including a giant white staircase being hauled into the venue, with a massive castle set already building inside.
In parallel. additional details have surrounded the event: a custom wedding menu. a National Guard presence outside the arena. a strict no-phone policy for staffers. and watermark-protected invitations with NDAs for guests—measures that have been described as making it one of the most tightly guarded celebrity weddings ever.
The city’s outreach plan makes clear what happens outside the spotlight matters just as urgently as what’s happening onstage: with heat peaking during the busiest hours, officials are aiming to keep people safe when staying outside could become a daily-life gamble.

So they’re sending teams to MSG like it’s a party? Smh.
I don’t get how they expect people to just go inside Penn Station or a shelter like that’s easy. And 100 degrees is no joke. But also Taylor Swift wedding weekend?? Like they can’t even have one normal summer plan without politics.
They say they can’t force anyone to move… okay so then what are the teams even doing besides walking around with clipboards? My cousin said they’re mostly just trying to clear the area for the celebrity crowd and then the heat story comes after.
Code Red heat emergency while they’re building a castle inside MSG and putting a giant staircase out there?? Somehow I feel like they’ll worry more about the wedding photos than the actual people outside. Like if outreach workers can’t make anyone go, then doesn’t that mean everybody’s on their own in the 90s between noon and 8? Just seems like common sense should’ve started earlier than July 2 too.
