For West Ham, Sunday didn’t just end in relegation—it ended in noise.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side beat Leeds United 3-0 at the London Stadium. but the result proved pointless as Tottenham secured a 1-0 win over Everton to condemn West Ham to the Championship. By the time the final whistle had barely settled, the talk wasn’t only football. Hours after relegation was confirmed. Marrion Areola—wife of West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola—took aim at the head coach on social media. accusing him of dropping her husband “for no particular reason.”.

Nuno has now been summoned for talks by West Ham, with the expectation he will leave his position.

The decision comes after Nuno’s appointment at the end of September. replacing Graham Potter following Potter’s sacking five matches into the Premier League season. Nuno. a 52-year-old. had signed a three-year contract at the London Stadium. including a clause allowing West Ham to sack him without compensation if they were relegated.

West Ham’s record under Nuno told its own story. In his 33 Premier League matches in charge, they won nine, drew nine and lost 15. Their final total of 39 points was the highest ever achieved by a relegated side since 2011.

After relegation was confirmed, Nuno refused to be drawn on his own future. “If you ask me now about the past and the future, this is not the day. Today is to understand the moment of sadness for our fans, of ourselves, of the club,” he said. He added, “Our attention was all on achieving the mission that we didn’t accomplish. Now we need to go to this period of sadness.” When pushed for a timeframe and whether he wanted to stay. he replied: “You keep insisting about that. but my mind is not there.” He then said. “Next press conference. for sure we can speak about that. but today is not about this.”.

Off the pitch, the accusations were already making their own rounds.

Marrion Areola had sarcastically thanked Graham Potter and Nuno for West Ham’s season. before claiming Nuno had dropped her husband “for no particular reason” in February. She continued her attack in a series of Instagram posts on Sunday night. framing West Ham’s fall from their 2023 Conference League triumph—marked in the posts with memories of that success—as the start of a decline that ended in relegation.

In one post, she directly linked Nuno to Alphonse Areola missing out on France’s World Cup squad. “Being dropped at the beginning of the season for no reason. ” Marrion wrote. before describing her husband’s return to the team and then the abrupt change that followed. She wrote: “Being back after a very bad start and then has made 20 games and all of a sudden: ‘I’m really sorry – you won’t start’. ‘Why?’. ‘For no particular reason but I’m sorry.’”.

Her account also referred to changes in goalkeeping at the start of the Nuno era. Areola lost his place as West Ham’s No 1 under Potter after Mads Hermansen was signed from Leicester in an £18m move in the summer. Areola regained his place after Hermansen struggled in West Ham’s opening four matches of the campaign. during which the Hammers lost three times and shipped 11 goals. Areola then played in West Ham’s next 20 Premier League matches—19 under Nuno.

But Marrion’s posts suggest she believed the decision-making around Areola never truly settled. West Ham won only four of those 20 matches, and Areola conceded 37 goals while failing to keep a clean sheet.

Hermansen returned to the starting line-up after West Ham’s 3-2 loss by Chelsea at the end of January. even though Hermansen had led 2-0 at half-time. West Ham’s results improved for a stretch after that shift: in the next 10 games. they won four. drew four and lost two to climb out of the relegation zone. Still. the numbers carried a warning sign—West Ham conceded 10 goals in that run. including half the total in a 5-2 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

The season then slipped away in the closing stages. West Ham suffered an end-of-season collapse with three straight defeats against Brentford, Arsenal and Newcastle, leaving them heading into the final day in the relegation zone.

Marrion’s posts also included a December reference to Areola’s performance level. sharing a clip that stated he had the highest save percentage in the Premier League. After West Ham’s relegation was confirmed, she wrote: “Very sad day for the fans. Very frustrated for the family. But always proud of you no matter what.” She then returned to the World Cup grievance. sharing highlights from Areola’s five appearances for France’s national team and writing: “And NO World Cup this year. thank you Nuno.”.

Tensions inside the club were also part of the picture as the season ended.

According to the Athletic, Nuno had clashed with defender Jean-Clair Todibo following West Ham’s penultimate match of the season. Todibo was substituted after 25 minutes as West Ham trailed 2-0 to Newcastle last weekend. Nuno introduced forward Taty Castellanos in a tactical change. The Frenchman reportedly had a heated exchange with Nuno post-match. resulting in Todibo telling the West Ham boss he would not play for him again.

Todibo then did not make the squad for West Ham’s victory over Leeds on the final day.

What makes the end of West Ham’s Premier League story feel so stark is how neatly the facts line up across the club: relegation arrived despite a 3-0 win over Leeds; Nuno’s contract structure gave West Ham a clear route to move on if they dropped into the Championship; and the anger that followed didn’t stay inside the stadium. spilling into posts that tied team decisions to a player’s standing with France.

West Ham have now set a new immediate chapter in motion. Nuno has been summoned for talks, with the expectation he will leave after the club’s relegation after a 14-year stay in the top flight comes to an end on Sunday.

  1. If his players were actually trying, how did this happen. And that wife lady going off on him like that… wild. I don’t even follow West Ham like that but this feels messy.

  2. Wait are they saying he dropped the goalkeeper because the wife posted it? Cuz that’s what it sounds like. Also Tottenham beating Everton at the same time kinda feels like a conspiracy or whatever, not gonna lie.

  3. Relegation after a 3-0 win is just brutal. Like you’d think that’d buy him at least a season. But then the article mentions the wife accusing him of dropping the husband?? So Nuno’s basically cooked on and off the pitch. I’m sure West Ham will blame “bad luck” or injuries or something but the whole thing sounds like drama more than football.
