Not a Shore Thing: Trump’s Lake America Name Swap Flops With Majority of US Citizens, New Poll Shows

President Donald Trump’s decision to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America has failed to make much of a splash.
A new poll released by Reuters/Ipsos on Tuesday showed only 14% of American citizens dig the name swap, which Trump made official on government documents last week with an executive order. And a whole lot more aren’t fans of it, with the poll finding 63% oppose the change; the remaining 23% did not have an opinion on it or skipped the question altogether.
The rechristened Lake America is less popular than the new tariff Trump slapped on Canadian goods last month too, with 57% of respondents saying they opposed the tariffs; only 20% said they supported the president on it. Trump’s 50% tariff on Canda went into effect on August 22, following the collapse of last-minute deal talks to avoid a trade war.
When reached by Fox News Digital for a response to the poll, White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said, “Canada has been a bad neighbor by ripping off our country for years.”
She added, “President Trump promised voters that he would not allow our country to be taken advantage of anymore, which is why he is fighting so hard to protect American industries and workers. Thanks to the President’s bold leadership, we are putting America back on the map.”
The whole Lake America-Lake Ontario hubbub started after the deal talks fell apart. It immediately riled up many liberals, while a ton of MAGA fans hailed the move by saying it was elite trolling from Trump. Google also went ahead and changed the name for U.S. users on its Maps app.
Trump kept the jabs at Canada coming last weekend by posting a video of machine gun-wielding Canadian geese — which he dubbed “Donald Ducks” — patrolling the lake on his behalf.
He followed the geese video up a bit later with an AI clip of himself kicking over a sign reading “Lake Ontario” and planting a Lake America sign in its place. The president then broke into his trademark “YMCA” dance in the video.
And on Sunday, Trump declared he wanted the USA to reject all products coming from North of the border — unless those Canadian companies are willing to relocate to the States.
“I don’t want Canadian cars, I don’t want Canadian parts, I don’t want Canadian anything,” Trump fumed.
He continued, “They’ve been ripping us off for decades, and it’s going to stop. This should have happened long ago with other Presidents, just as stopping Iran should have happened long ago. They want to be treated like a State, but they aren’t one. I deal with the Leadership of many Countries, but I find Canada to be the worst. They are entitled no longer!”
Tuesday’s poll was based on responses from 1,023 American adults; it had a margin of error of four points.
