A historic retail business is set to close in the downtown Garland area.
Baker’s Main Street Furniture is set to close permanently after more than a century in operation, the company said. The retailer, a third-generation family-owned business, has begun its final liquidation.
The building, located at 524 Main St., covers about 16,000 square feet and is for sale.
Its history stretches back to 1923, when August Marvin “A.M.” Baker founded the business as a hardware and general store in Wylie. Roughly nine years later, Baker moved the operation to Garland and expanded into furniture. The store would get its three-story showroom amid family renovations.
A.M.’s son, F.K. Baker, assumed ownership of the family business in 1946 after returning from service in the U.S. Navy, the statement said. Then, his son, James Baker, became the next generation of family leadership around 1980 and led the business for nearly 30 years. Ownership would shift to his brothers, David and John Baker.
And now, David Baker is preparing to retire, and the family has made the “difficult decision” to close, the statement said.
“It has been nothing short of a privilege and honor for the Baker family to be part of this community for more than 100 years and serve generations of families,” David Baker said in the statement.
The closure announcement comes as other furniture stores in North Texas and beyond have shuttered as well. Earlier this year, Weir’s Furniture, whose multidecade history is tied to the Knox Street area in Dallas, said it was closing its retail operations.
The final sale at Baker’s Main Street Furniture is underway.
