North Dakota expands VR career training to elementary

North Dakota is equipping students—starting in elementary school—with VR headsets and career-focused software. The state says the goal is simple: overcome travel barriers in a largely rural area and help younger children visualize careers earlier, with a progr

For a fourth grader in North Dakota. the closest they may come to an emergency room isn’t a hospital visit—it’s a virtual one. Nearby. another child is learning the feel of an autobody shop. while a classmate peers over the top of a 300-foot-tall wind turbine. None of it is happening on high-risk job sites, at least not in real life.

The experience is part of a growing push across the state to put virtual reality headsets into classrooms. starting with even the youngest students. North Dakota’s approach runs counter to a broader national debate about limiting screen time. Here. leaders argue that VR can address a problem rural students face every year: getting to career sites that may be hours away.

Mackenzie Tadych. director of Northern Cass School’s college career and readiness program. describes the barrier bluntly—students can face travel hurdles to visit job sites that could be several hours away. “The VR investment ‘was an attempt to engage students at an earlier age and develop an awareness of [the careers] the state has to offer. ’” said Wayde Sick. the state director for the Department of Career and Technical Education. “This is the first glance to show what is out there without throwing a bunch of students on a bus where you drive two hours for a field trip and two hours back.”.

  1. I don’t get how VR is supposed to replace anything. Like, are they still doing math or is it just wind turbines and car shops all day? Also screen time debate aside, I worry it’ll make kids think careers are all fun and games.

  2. Wait the article says the closest ER is a virtual one… so are they admitting they can’t get kids to actual places? Sounds like a cop-out to me. And 300-foot wind turbine?? Kids are gonna be dizzy lol.

  3. Honestly rural access is real, but putting VR headsets in elementary school feels kinda wild. My cousin teaches and they barely have enough computers that work, so I’m like… who’s maintaining these? Plus I saw “RUReady ND” and “CareerViewXR” and I’m just assuming it’s some company trying to sell software more than it’s truly education.
