Nirvana to Receive Video Vanguard Award at MTV VMAs 2026 | Just Jared

Nirvana is being honored in a massive way.

The “Smells Like Teen Spirit” rock band will receive the coveted Video Vanguard Award during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, airing live on September 27 on CBS beginning at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The show will also simulcast on MTV and streaming on Paramount+ (Premium) in the U.S., and will be available globally the next day on Paramount+ and MTV.

Nirvana took to the stage at the VMAs for the first time 34 years ago today (September 9) during the 1992 ceremony.

The band released three studio albums: Bleach, Nevermind, and In Utero. Nirvana was founded by late lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. They had a series of drummers including Chad Channing, before recruiting Dave Grohl in 1990.

Join us as we celebrate Nirvana‘s incredible legacy on Sunday, September 27 on @CBStv, @MTV, and streaming on @ParamountPlus,” the network shared in the social media announcement.

This year, Madonna has the most nominations at the VMAs! She has 11 to her name, including video, artist and song of the year! She’s also up for best collaboration, dance, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects.
